I saw somewhere that following what Leeds did three seasons ago, the rules were changed so that if a club goes into administration after a certain date - the points deduction does not take effect until the next season. This date has passed so it is as per the rules for the points deduction to take effect next season. Not sure however about the points applying this season if they would not have otherwise finished in the bottom three though. Think this might be the harsh bit and that they should be able to start in the Championship with minus ten points in that case.

I think the rule is, if they wouldn't normally be relegated, but the points deduction would relegate them, then it is applied this season. Otherwise it is applied next season (i.e. if they would be relegated anyway, or finished >10 points ahead of 22nd).

Penalised Saints face relegation

Southampton will be relegated from the Championship after being docked 10 points by the Football League.

The penalty comes after the club's parent company went into administration at the start of April.

Southampton are currently four points off safety with two games to go and, even if they beat the drop, they will be deducted 10 points.

If they do not avoid finishing in the bottom three then the points penalty will take effect next season.

The south-coast outfit had hoped to avoid the punishment as they argued that it it's parent company Southampton Leisure Holdings plc had gone into administration.

But a League investigation by "forensic accountants" found that the club and the holding company were "inextricably linked as one economic entity" and applied their mandatory penalty.

Joint Administrators to Southampton Leisure Holdings Plc response to the Football League's Independent Report

The joint administrators ("the Administrators") to Southampton Leisure Holdings plc ("the Company"), the AIM-listed holding company that owns Southampton Football Club ("the Club") today issued the following response to the findings of the independent forensic report commissioned by the Football League ("the League").

The Administrators and the Club were informed of the League's intention to issue a release on the findings of the independent forensic report five minutes before its publication, allowing no time for consultation and both the Administrator and the Club to inform fans, players and staff.

We are of the opinion that an incorrect conclusion has been reached. The football regulations do not apply to the circumstances surrounding Southampton Football Club. This is a view shared by the lawyers and advisers to both the Club and the Administrators.

The point surrounding non-cooperation is not accepted. A different scope of investigation was issued to the Club and to the accountants instructed by the League which resulted in questions being raised outside of the scope of the investigation. This matter had been raised by the solicitor acting for the Club and no response has been received. Both the Club and the Administrator were unaware that the investigation had been concluded.

Both the Club and the Administrators are now considering their positions and expect to launch an appeal.

The league will be hoping that they go down 'naturally' otherwise a legal fight/appeal over the summer will cause a right mess. Imagine if Saints stayed up, got the penalty applied - thus going down and 'saving' Barnsley, only to win an appeal in July and re-relegate Barnsley.

Quite right actually and not harsh in the slightest, stops the loophole of clubs waiting until their season is decided and then going into administration.

Don't think it's harsh at all. There's no point doccing points if it has absolutly no affect. And if Saints got away with the parent company bollocks, no club would ever get done for going into admin again, they'd just keep shifting all the debts to a holding company and get away with it.

Very pleased the Scummers are guaranteed down and have all the more incentive to win their next couple of games.

Well that's them fooked then. If they don't get themselves a CVA they could be in another relegation battle next season! Someone correct me if I'm wrong but if you don't get a CVA by th beginning of next season its another 17 points deducted and at the moment they are very hard to attain. CVAs give football related debts the highest priority to prevent administration from affecting other clubs the hardsest, yet the taxman is opposed to this as in any other situation their debts would be settled first. Therefore the taxman has the right to stop any CVAs going through making it very difficult to avoid the 17 point deduction.
