Just responding to the comments on here about it possibly going to Jan. I have no problem with a country moving the world cup to another time in the year. If doing so allows an area of the world to host the tournament then so be it. Might seema bit weird changing the season around in Europe to fit around it but I am sure they would all manage just fine.

I've not read anything that indicates the training facilities and fan zones etc will be air-conned as well as the stdiums, but I may well have missed that.

Also, on the social justice aspect, there's a fair point made in the comments section - when England hosted a World Cup, being gay was illegal here. Why should that necessarily be a reason not to hold a sports tournament? .

The world has changed quite a bit in the last 40 odd years you know. I do think there should be some 'human rights' element to the selection process to reward the right behaviour (as set out by FIFA's rules of course, not just UK liberal view). I'm not saying tha Qatar don't pass the equivalent of the 'fit and proper person' test, but I'd hope that some consideration is made to the hosts laws and morals etc before taking the World Cup there.

I like the fact that a negative point of the England bid was apparently not enough hotel rooms avaialble for FIFA officials and yet not having the stadia or air con facilities isn't seen as much of a downer on the Qatar bid.

By the way isn't Qatar so small that all the grounds are likely to have to be built next to each other

I am liking this more and more as I think about it. Early evening kick offs during the summer and a winter break meaning less chance of games being postponed.

Guess that also ruins the whole FA Cup 3rd round vibe - where shitty January pitches act as a leveller.

As long as there are guarantees that the break is a genuine break. and the big clubs can't jet their squads off to the far east to play exhibition matches there.

And, of course, Sod's Law applies, so you can be sure that the first time there was a break January would be mild and completely playable, and then blizzards would shut down the whole game for 3 weeks once football resumed in February or whenever.

There's no way the fixture list would allow a break while we have a 20 team PL - if they reduced it to 18 teams (as they were initially going to) then they could have a break - but they also wouldn't need it so much!

particularly as Qatar only has 51 hotels in the country.

They claimed to have 50,000 rooms though, mainly through the dubious practice of including apartments that are rented out.

Still, the Qataris have promised to built at least 90,000 rooms for the world cup, so that's alright then.

No, the UK has. I think it was quite some way behind the rest of Europe with such laws. But it's easy to forget that when condemning Muslims, eh.

I think they've come on massively in the UK, yes. My country never made being gay illegal, though.

Actually, 'my country' which I referred to IS in Europe. And I didn't necessarily mean you, or anyone on this board specifically, when implying anti-Muslim sentiment being a subtext to a lot of these objections. It certainly is there though. One just needs to consider the number of lies we've heard about alcohol being illegal, women not being allowed to drive or watch football, or other such comments where people seem to have Qatar confused with Saudi Arabia or Iran.

So, when you said only the UK had come a long way in terms of gay rights what did you mean because from what I'm aware of plenty of the world have changed their view on gays in that time.

I thought 'your county' was Germany by the way (may have that wrong of course)? As a leading power in Europe they only legalised gay activity in the late 60's.
