Fully agree with ScottishRoyals excellent post. We really are served up lazy TV pundits who get paid for their"expert" opinions and yet have not bothered to undertake any background research at all about the teams they will be commenting upon. Its all part of having "big names" in the TV studios but the likes of Shearer offer nothing...apart from bland platitudes.

As for the crux of the issue discussed, the lack of research, it really is quite embarrassing. In any form of consultancy, research or academic work this is a pre-requisite for good work. If you don't do it you don't get repeat business or a good grade. Sadly ITV is so bad that the BBC don't feel the need to up their game either.

what also grates with me is when you get a world cup match between two lesser nations, particularly on the BBC, they smugly sit around with a "who cares about this shitty game?" attitude as if it's beneath them to even discuss it. They somehow fail to grasp that even though they couldn't give a toss about the match, the people who have tuned in specifically to watch the game, might.

This is certainly true, but just adds to the argument to include people like O'Neill and Strachan to the 'expert' panel. These guys aren't part of the cosy clique currently on the TV and give their views whether they're popular or not. When someone else talks shit these guys pull them up on it.
