And the rest. Sadly I don't see how you can go from Everton -> Man United -> Sociedad -> Reading but I could be wrong. He's a small budget specialist. I also fully agree with everyone having to start somewhere too. We're in a position where we have nothing to lose after two of the most mediocre seasons I can ever remember (bar the FA Cup Semi) so I say chill out and enjoy the ride.

The fact he turned down Aston Villa, despite them offering him the job means he doesn't see himself as a Championship manager. He's probably holding out for a return to Everton

As for Stam - this appointment would excite me. A world class defender in his prime, coaching credentials from what is regarded as great philosophy ways at Ajax plus a key scout at Manchester United he must come with great connections and contacts. Someone has to start somewhere, it's the Reading way!!

That will always be the case with us.... But get us success, move on, someone then can have challenge of sustaining it - other than the big six it's the best any club can hope for apart from Crewe Alexandra.

I don't think so - at least not after just 6 months. Any "big name" ex-player we appoint will always be on the look out for a move somewhere bigger than us as soon as he's strung half a dozen wins together. Just look at Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank - would QPR have moved in for him after 6 months if he'd been Gillingham's former youth manager?

Dolan is not as big a name as Stam, so would draw slightly less interest. He's not particularly shown big ambition to manage in the top flight, so the draw would be a little lower and doing well to earn a big move would not be his primary and near exclusive objective. Yeah he'd go eventually, but it's degrees.

McDermott didn't go to Wolves when offered the chance, for example.

I don't think there is anything necessarily wrong with picking an untried newbie. In fact, some of our most successful managers have had no previous managerial experience (Branfoot, McGhee, Pardew, McDermott). TBH it's pretty much a lottery whichever way you go, especially with a whole bunch of clueless owners running the shop. Say what you like about Sir John but he was a pretty good judge of character and appointed far more good managers than bad.
