It's what I've been saying consistently. As fans we're not particualrly knee jerk and hard on our managers. We tend to give them time. Yes there are a few moaners, but really compare that to other teams, we're nice.

At the beginning of the month it would have been inconceivable that Stam wouldn't be Reading manager in February. Whilst it's way too early to say he should go, there's a palpable feel of the tide turning tonight and right now it feels inevitable that there's going to be a sustained run of poor results that lead to his eventual exit.

The next few games look hard. And Stam's comments have eroded the willingness of many fans to accept any poor performance. There's a lot of pressure coming up. And we know the team buckled under the ultimate pressure last season. The players need to stand up for Stam and put in performances. They need to take the initiative and play with instinct and intelligence. He can't play the match for them and they simply aren't doing well enough, not helped by his selection choices and over-emphasis on passing out from the back, particularly from goalkicks.

We are not far away from being a very good side again. I think we have the staff in house as well to start getting much better results. Of course we definitely need a top drawer striker. But we have so much quality in the dressing room that Stam needs to start being more consistent in his approach and learn from Coppell. Don't change a winning team.

Agreed that's part of the problem and JS has admitted he selects a team and tactics that he thinks will win the game rather than building his best 11 and then just changing it when injury, an obvious loss of form and suspension dictate. I've always hated that approach as it smacks of being more concerned about how the opposition play rather than defining a team with an implicit understanding of each other's game and movement and letting the opposition do the worrying.

That has been more or less the approach of all the successful managers Reading have had while those that have constantly fiddled about have uktimately got nowhere.
