sandman Amazing how the same sort of people who criticised McDermott for making a short term signings like Ian Harte and Jason Roberts are salivating at signing 33 year old Wayne Bridge and the prospect of 34 year old Matt Upson.

Who? Like you?

Roberts and Harte were hardly failures. Both played bloody brilliantly for us and if Roberts had not got injured we just may, just may, not have gone down with such a whimper.

Harte only had a year left and we brought in a former England International on a one year deal - sound familiar?

Roberts was seriously injured so he couldn't really help it if he couldn't play and make a difference.

I'm not against Bridge or Upson signing they are both good players for the level we are at. All I am saying is that if you are going to criticise the previous manager for short term thinking then you have to at least raise the same objections to prospect of the current manager signing a 33 year old and a 34 year old. You wouldn't want to be a hypocrite now would you?

See post above please. I have quoted the person I am referring to on page 5 of the Bridge no longer a rumour thread.

Age isn't the only indicator of quality though... And it's not really fair to equate Shorey (2 caps) and Bridge (36 caps) based on their having been England Internationals.

That being said, I was fairly positive about Shorey coming back. It's only with hindsight that it was regrettable. Hopefully Bridge will prove different.

And if Adkins does sign them and they're both still first choice in the PL the season after next because we haven't signed enough longer term talent to replace them, then Adkins will rightly get critisised too.

As mentioned on another thread. Kilgallon, Upson and Berra, all released or seemingly available, all left-sided CB's, which one?

I would have to say I would want whatever cb that is most comfortable on the ball and has the confidence to play their way out of the back.

Right....so because they're free, we have to sign one of them?

Agree with Yateley's point but if we were to sign one (presuming that all are injury free and showing no impediment to playing) then I would go with Upson. I have never really been that impressed by Kilgallon. Hasn't he been at Leeds Utd, Sheffield Utd and Sunderland already and yet has he really shone? Not sure. Berra I'm not sure about. Came down from Hearts to Wolves didn't he, and then they got relegated twice? Whilst it wouldn't have been all his fault alone, you have to think can he really be that quality?? Which leaves Upson.

I don't really know a lot about him to be honest. Maybe a couple of relegations under your belt may give you motivation to put something on the plus side of the career balance sheet?

I'd rather we keep Kaspars for one more year, he knows what is required at this level. Unless we are bringing in a PL class defender I really do not see the point in adding to this area of the pitch, would rather see a young cb come through from our acadmey if we are just signing fringe players from other NPC teams.

Then if we do go back up, that would be the time to spend good money on this area. I really think Morro only needs another season of experience and I think we will start to see an awesome pairing in him and Mariappa. Gorkks should be good enough as back up so unless he has anything against being on the bench, I think we should look to keep a hold of him.

This is also dependent on whether he fits in with Adkin's plans however.

He would probably have been 4th choice here. But rather have him than Gorkss.

Won't argue with that, but he wouldn't have signed on here as fourth choice when he could be first choice at Brighton.

Bit expensive for 4th choice as well.

Shame? He's got dodgy knees and wouldn't want to be 3rd of 4th choice. I'd sooner we brought a youngster in as 4th choice, and if anything happened to any of the three ahead of him, a loan.
