I can see what they mean in a way... but also I question that.

We have convincingly earned our points and I think people are judging us on last season. As an oursider I would write us off.

We have a weakeened squad due to injuries and I know that doesn't necessarily mean we will be magicall ystronger, it does mean we have more to come. We know that Stam tried to sign strikers in the summer, so who knows. I guarantee we will be stronger on paper after Jan than before.

You can't be third if you lose every game, except for some bizarre set of circumstances for the first two games. That's an incredibly stupid thing to say.

Based on the opinion of the person saying it, they obviously think that team X aren't as good as their current form suggests.

It's not that hard a concept is it?

For example, after a dozen games, Reading have played a load of the weaker teams, a couple of better teams but at home and there's been a couple of games where we've been awarded a penalty with the opposition picking up red cards. It means we've won 8, drawn 3 and lost 1 and sit pretty in 2nd place in the table.

Over the course of a 46 game season the fixtures will obviously balance out and usually the luck that might've helped us get a couple of results will even itself out. Other will things like strength in depth and players hitting a hot or cold patch. We might then end up in 8th.

When we're 2nd it might well be an opinion of someone that it's a false position as they think there are more sides better than us.

Don't get so hung up m8 .it's just an expression.
Perhaps people need to say something like "in my opinion this Reading team might not be in such a lofty position come the end of the season as we have tended to play the weaker teams at home and accumulated more points than if we had played the harder teams so by the end of the season we could be in a worse position if the better teams maintain their form and we don't as I think we have had most of the luck going so far such as that sending-off earlier this season when the player gave lip to the ref, something that refs no longer bother with and we got 3 points but might not have if the player had stayed on the pitch"

Alternatively perhaps something like "I think we are in a false position" is a bit easier to say and the meaning is understood by the majority apart from the odd pedant or two.
