I actually think playing in a Division 2 South kind of set up would add some excitement to it

The main problem is the PFA and players contracts. The clubs are lumbered with players on contracts they can't afford to pay and a government who doesn't want to step in and fund that with tax payers money whilst at the same time stopping clubs from receiving gate receipts.

It's a mess that looks like a lot of clubs need to fold get the PL and government to get them some cash. Given the Arts got £1.5bn a handout that is relatively small change would go a long way in the lower tiers to save clubs.

At lower levels, some players are in for a shock in a year or two if their club are still going. With the salary cap in place, some will have to take significant pay cuts to stay employed. The cap in L2, based on a squad of 22 means the average salary will be 68k going forward - the average for L2 at the moment is just north of 100k per year.

In L1 with a 2.5m cap, the average salary for a 22 man squad will be 114k or about 2.2k per week - this is less than half the current average wage.

Not a bad thing IMO. Why is it a League 2 footballer should earn more than a postman or a paramedic? It shouldn't have happened in the first place and a salary cap system should have been around long before now.

Maybe not for for a career which might only last a handful of years, I think you'd be wanting to do some additional work to go alongside that.

What info are you basing that on, especially considering the cost of living varies quite a bit within the country?

I am basing it on the amount of time they would be actually working. On average about 4 hours a day. A salary of 25k is very reasonable for the level they are playing at for the amount of time they'd be doing it for. If 25k isn't enough for them then they have plenty of time to do other work if they wish.

Why is that a bad wage in comparison to what they actually do though? They are a footballer, it is a very easy job in comparison to others and a privilege.

I wouldn't say so. Even at league 2 Need to be an elite athlete, at risk of injury, and basically live and breathe football which is obviously training/meetings/public appearances and then at L2 level have the risk of either getting released or not having a very good career and then nothing to do after.

I would much rather be a desk Job 9 to 5 then a 25k a year footballer. Look at Bury, none of their players were able to pay bills or mortgage as they didn't get paid. And basically travelling around all over the place and having Xmas and boxing day and new years ruined. Plus if you go down to national league you're having to work 2 jobs then.

Obviously when it gets to PL and Champ it's way different.

The PL say they will keep this under review, and for now at least it seems pretty easy to suppose that the first review will be 'shit, no-one wanted to fork out £15 a game!'

I would extend the PL to 40 clubs in two divisions. PL1 with 18 clubs and PL2 with 22. There would be the standard 3 up and 3 down between the divisions.

Don’t know the ins and outs of the idea but apparently a new idea is being proposed where the Prem is being cut to 18 teams which links to your idea

Yep PL pissed this has come out so must be on the money.

Not sure where 2 extra clubs fit in the EFL unless 2 extra drop out the bottom or go bust.

Deal includes 25% of all new TV deals going to the EFL, parachute payments scrapped and the play-offs changed so that the team finishing 16th in the PL play off against 3rd to 5th in the Championship.

Would also give more power to 9 clubs defined as long term share holders of the PL.

EFL apparently supportive as will clearly massively boost bank accounts at EFL level even if it makes it harder to get to the top than today.
