Andy, why does the BBC insist on using non-geographical numbers for local radio phone-ins?

For your travel and sport features, the majority of people phoning will be calling from mobiles or from home.

Most people have contracts with inclusive minutes enabling them to call landlines and mobiles as part of their pre-payed contract. Unfortunately, 0845, 0870 etc numbers are not included in most people's tariffs therefore they have to pay extra, or are prevented from accessing these numbers as their mobile contract requires topping up.

Why don't you issue an 0118 number? Is it because it makes you see too Reading-orientated?

But don't worry, all full-time staff here have to pronounce Madejski right (and Sailosi Tagicakibau) 100 times in their interview before being let on air.

Nearly all of our Saturday travel comes from external freelancers who sometimes aren't aware of the correct pronunciation, but they are usually branded with hot irons for getting it wrong.

Apologies nonetheless.

"We introduced these numbers originally to deliver the price of a local call right across the patch.

However, times are changing and I appreciate that many people now have phone deals which include call rates and it is for that reason that the BBC is now reviewing its policy on using 0845 numbers."
