West Ham domestically are well branded, but abroad they don't seem much of a force which is why I had Chelsea over them.

Fair point, Chelsea now probably have a big 'following' in Asia etc where their money bandwagon rolls, domestically though I'd say all 3 of the other major London clubs have a bigger following and fan base along with a richer history rather than the current Chelsea bank balance.

As European competitions are far away ahead of domestic issues then the top 4 is surely :-
Liverpool
Nottingham Forest
Man Utd
Aston Villa

London clubs win a few FA and League Cups because they are mainly played just around the corner so it's almost home advantage whereas the North-West giants such as Liverpool,Man Utd,Blackburn,Bolton,Everton and City have to travel extreme distances and yet still win many of those cups.

There are only two really big clubs in England, Utd and Liverpool, probably in that order. Arsenal can't really be considered a big club until they manage to win the CL - although they do score more highly than Liverpool on the matatu index. Chelsea are just a small club having a few good seasons - a modern Notts Forest. If they are still winning stuff in 10 years time we might need to reassess.

It's necessary but not sufficient - so in my opinion it is essential.
