I'm not so sure. I'd possibly go along with the train of thought that Utd wouldn't want to touch him with a barge pole because of his total lack of class.

Utd, for all their faults, have an enigma and class about them that is almost as important as the players in terms of creating and maintaining the aura of the club. They have also always played with a great swashbuckling attacking style. Jose just doesn't fit in with that.

I'm not sure it'll be a good career move for any top manager to follow Fergie either. Look what it did for Rodgers following Coppell, or O'Farrell and less so the Doc following Busby.

I can see Jose being a better fit at City or Liverpool where he can't do much worse and has a chance, as he did at Chelsea, to provide either clubs first League title for donkeys years. I'm sure that hero opportunity would appeal more to him.

Not all countries were getting involved no, but it was still pretty much the select of European football and they dominated it...in fact Bernabeu was a leader in getting it up and running so you could say they led the way in more ways than one.

Exactly what I was getting at about Utd. They were rubbish and couldn't win the league for all their efforts and financial clout. That didn't stop them being one of the top clubs and a massive appeal if any player had the chance to go there. Exactly the same with Real, it doesn't matter that they've not excelled in the Champions League for a few years, there still isn't a club with more appeal.

In other words "the English teams weren't involved so the competition doesn't count".

Read Sir Bobby Charlton's account of when the Busby Babes first played against that team. Madrid beat according to the old timers that saw them were one of the greatest teams this country has ever produced and beat them well. That should tell you how great they were.

Since when have Real Madrid been one of the Big 3. Yes they have fantastic History, as do Liverpool, But what have they won recently that is a major trophy?

Football is not just about the here and now.
Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world let alone just part of The Dog's big3.

Since De Stefano and Puskas won then 5 European Cups on the trot and Bernabeu turned them into the THE European super power. They've never really slipped from there, in the same way as Utd never really slipped out of the top few clubs in England despite not winning the league for however long, 27 years wasn't it TMD?

Not sure I would say there's a top 3, maybe more like 5 or 6 though. Either way, Real would be one of them.

BTW which club out of Man Utd,Liverpool,Arsenal,Everton,Bayern Munich,AC Milan,Inter Milan,Barcelona and even Athletic Bilbao have been relegated from it's country's top division in the past 40 years?
Yes,you've got it,an English club and it isn't Liverpool,Arsenal or Everton.
The really big clubs don't get relegated.

I'm more Red than Devil having idolised King Kenny and the likes of Souness and Hanson, but I really can't be bothered with the pointless point scoring coming on here and ruining some interesting threads.

Even in the 2nd division Utd remained one of the countries top few clubs, and to quote someone close to your heart, football isn't 'just about the here and now' and it wasn't back then either.

When United were in Div 2 we got bigger gates than you got while you were in Div 1. Infact we got the biggest average gate out of any English side.
