I think I am OK with this one, as long as the contract is just for 18 months and he doesn't have a clause whereby he can trigger an extension of another year (unless of course it suit the club as well to extend in 18 months).
IIRC Roberts was able to trigger such an extension, at a time when he was quite incapable of playing any more. You would have to say that clause was well negotiated by Roberts and his advisers and not well negotiated by the club.

Thanks for the clarification about when Roberts' extension was signed but that is still a mistake that we should not make with Kermogant, i.e. give him a new contract when he has only done about 9 months of his original 18.
Roberts did well initially, of course, and let's hope Kermogant can do the same.

If Roberts had a clause giving him an extension if we got promoted, and we got promoted thanks in no small part to him, then how can that be a mistake ?
And the usual criticism of the club is they leave it late before offering new deals (although that isn't actually true). It seems pretty standard to look at extending a deal with a year to run...

With Roberts It might have been a contractual requirement that we offer an additional year contingent on playing a certain number of games. It's not uncommon.
