Doesn't 29 have personal significance for Wing? Aside from his obvious ability, he's a good personality to have in the squad. He didn't sign a professional contract until he was 22 so knows the world outside football.

Hear me out as I know the addiction issues but…. Aaron Connolly remember seeing him playing for Brighton years ago and expecting him to be the next big name.

Has struggled with alcoholism since and effectively every clubs answer to that is to drop him after a season. Just released by Milwall. Wondered with the right environment and a nurturer like Noel Hunt he is the type of player at 25 could be worth a punt on.

Would love to have Holmes or Abbey back on loan, McIntyre lovely guy but injury prone

IMO Holmes and TMc just weren’t good enough. I’m sure that’s probably not popular opinion but they always looked to have good potential without ever playing particularly well. They’d do an ok job in div1 but even then I don’t think they’d be a promotion winning pair. Bindon/Mbengue were streets ahead

I’d have Abbey back on loan though. Esp if Mbengue goes

IMO Holmes and TMc just weren’t good enough. I’m sure that’s probably not popular opinion but they always looked to have good potential without ever playing particularly well. They’d do an ok job in div1 but even then I don’t think they’d be a promotion winning pair. Bindon/Mbengue were streets ahead

Interesting take, not so much on Holmes and McIntyre, but in comparison to Abbey.

Both players had their issues. TMc mainly being his pace (excluding the injuries) but I think he was otherwise the better defender. Holmes had quality, but was a bit slow, and got too handsy in the box, probably a player most negatively affected by the club's poor performance when he could otherwise have kicked on. I think both more than good enough for this level.

Abbey though, his main attribute was that his pace could get him out of the trouble he repeatedly got himself in by not actually being that good a defender. Obviously experience played a big part in it, but then I don’t think we've seen a lot to suggest he's actually learnt better defending skills since.

I'm more optimistic about Pereira. We're the first club he's been no.1 at after many years as a reserve, so I think any club that wants him would need to have an obvious GK vacancy. I'm not familiar with the state of Championship squads: perhaps there are a couple of suitable options. Plus he's best mates with Wing who has signed up for the project.

Mbengue is higher risk. Earlier in his career so more time to break through, and if he's signed as a squad player at a higher level it's reasonable to assume he'll get opportunities over a season with injuries and suspensions.

Mbengue is a long way ahead of Abbey on the ball and has come on a long way in positioning and defensive intelligence. I think Abbey could reach the same level with more experience and good coaching, but it would be a short term step down if we lost Mbengue and loaned in Abbey to replace him. It's a shame we had to sell him as I think he'd have come on great strides in the past 18 months.

Yeah, can agree with that.

Not too keen on loaning in players for the spine of the team. You want that to be something you build around, not have to chop and change season to season. Wide players and maybe 10s more suited for loans.
