We did that same walk, found the end of the queue, said "fook that lets go find a cab and get to another line", walked back found a main road and had 4 of us looking out for a cab. It couldn't have been more than a 2min wonder once we got back on the main road (haven't a clue what road it was) - hailed a cab we asked if he could take us to the nearest/quickest tube not on the district/hammersmith line. £6.50ish/4 later we were dropped off outside a different lines station. Last time we were there all I remember is queuing for Upton Park station, giving up, walking through some proper RANK estates, and eventually finding another tube, the name of which escapes me...
