The American talking is Charlie Davies who played in Sweden, Denmark & France, but mostly America.

I think I totally agree with what he is saying and the others are coming up with poor examples because to agree with him feels like admitting to either you or your nation being prejudice against another nation. In my experience, Americans are not taken seriously outside of their country on most topics, especially on things we have more history and culture of.

I felt quite sorry for the bloke. I think he made a pretty valid point.

I think you just have to look at the success of the Women's team. There's been investment from the grass roots upfor decades.

The USA didn't even have a professional men's league until after they hosted the World Cup in 1994 so there's no proving ground for coaches or players. You therefore have to go to other countries and earn that respect. Even now, 30 years later, it's still seen as a retirement home for aging players and thanks to the way wages are structured in MLS, domestic players are paid relative peanuts and the grassroots structure is weak because men gravitate towards the money in the big 4 sports. Young talent gets hoovered up by European academies where the money, coaching and facilities are better.

The MLS salary cap is $5.5m per team and the maximum a player who comes under the cap can earn is $650k. Yet they can spaff millions on 3 marquee players who's wage doesn't count for the cap. Sorry home grown generational talent, I know we're paying Messi $500k a week, but we can only offer you $11k. No wonder they oxf*rd off to Europe as soon as possible. I guess the other question is, if they're not in a European academy at 17, are they actually good enough.

I think a bigger issue is that America still doesn't give football the respect it deserves.

Agree with the above although I do think it's a country that's certainly heading in the right direction with football in general, it's grown massively from where it first was and even when most people (maybe my generation) started paying attention when Beckham moved.

I don't think it will become near the popularity of European football in my lifetime, but I think it could be a good league overall. American clubs do pull in a lot of talent from South America, where there are a lot of players come through the system there. Inevitably, these will probably end up being poached by a European club if they are any good but if they can continue to churn out that talent, it will develop the clubs.

I personally like Philadelphia Union in the MLS, they tend to do things significantly differently to most of the other "big hitters" (or big-value clubs) and are successful in doing it. Jim Curtin has been there for a number of years and has done a fantastic job, would like to see him get a job in Europe somewhere. Not to say he is the manager we should have, but in principle he's the type of manager we should be wanting.

I'm not saying it isn't a good league, just that the structure encourages better domestic players to leave as young as possible. I think salary caps can work but it can't be right to have a system where one foreign superstar can still be paid more than a squad of homegrown players put together and that is baked into the league structure. It's like they don't value their own players. You can earn more as a punter in the NFL and that's about the least valued position financially.

While that persists, it will be difficult to convince the rest of the world that it should be taken seriously which is at the heart of Charles White's arguement.
