The only argument for it being the correct decision is if the official decides the reason Neymar has his hand there is for it to deflect the ball in if he misses his header.

I don't see how you can reasonably make that call, it's not unaunnatural to have your hands up like that when going for header.

I'd be genuinely interested to get our resident trained ref's explanation and justification. Because at the moment it just looks to me symptomatic of the failure to understand or accurately apply the laws as written.

I have no problem with the law being changed to prevent an advantage being gained by the ball hitting an arm. But that's not the law. Whether it should be or not is entirely different.

With Ba, I think he was further from making the header and his arm was further from his body. I can't remember where I stood at the time and I haven't seen it for a few years.

Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into consideration:
• the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
• the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
• the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an infringement
• touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement
• hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement


Now I wouldn't say the goal should stand but, considering they're the conditions in which the ref should blow for handball I would still suggest it's harsh to have it chalked off.

Surely in the case of Ba the goal was given because the ref didn't see the handball. I was in the Southstand behind the goal with a perfect view and I didn't see it either.
