Awards are subjective, medals are material proof of achievement and goals win games, but don't mean that a player is the "best" simply because he has scored more than his opponent in debates such as this. For instance, Gary Lineker scored hatfuls, but would come second to Bobby Moore in a who was the better player poll, despite the different eras in which they played.

Because he isn't selfish, and is a team player. I rarely see Lampard tracking back, or sitting deep while a fellow midfielder pushes on.

Cos these awards are all blinkered and people seem to think that you have to pull off every move in the book, score 20+ goals a season and appear in every newspaper and in every interview on MOTD/Sky

Schmeichel was the best Prem keeper in the 90's, prob the best keeper ever to play in the Prem and you could say the best keeper of all time, but he never won player of the year, not even Uniteds player of the year and never got a vote for the Europe / World player if the year, reason was because his role wasn't to steal headlines and he was never in all the fashion mags, like Scholes he just went about his business and was the best at what he did.

Isn't Maldini about 5 years older than Scholes though? I suppose its how you define a generation really.
