Reading is the only town centre that I know of that operates such a piss poor pub door policy. I really don't know why they feel they need as there hasn't been any major trouble in town for years. There was a game last season where Scrooge, Bob etc were having a few beers in town before the game. I was shopping and decided to join them to get some lunch, only I couldn't get in anywhere so I decided to just go home instead. What is the world coming too when a happy Saturday afternoon shopper can't get a pub lunch in town with his pals

3000 probably getting in the away end let alone all the Utd fans who manage to get in the home end

Manc fans seem to bundle extra's into the less prepared grounds

Every goes 'Well thats not possible with automated gates" but they have seem to have done it in numerous smaller new grounds such as West Brom,Wolves...etc

I've actually weighed Reading up and think it's one of the most jib friendly grounds now. That's because 2 methods of the jib have been ruled out. You can't jump over the full height gate and you can't forge a ticket. That said, I'm not sure if the tickets will work more than once, do they or is it one beep one rotation? A while back we got about 8 people in the Mad Stad by passing an ST back as each time the gate would open! It will just be a case of 'doubling up' although the notorious Moston Rats will no doubt pull their usual stunt which involves getting one person to open the fire exit from the inside while those outside run in. A few will get caught but more will get through

What happens in the case of a fire? The fire doors will not open as they are secured by plastic cable ties?

Can anybody clearly explain to me why the club appear to be powerless to control the away fans? As somebody who would far rather stand throughout I find it extremely frustrating when situations like today's (Aston Villa) arise. I accept the club are adhering to rules and regulations but given that's the case I really don't understand why there is no consistency. I would be "happier" to stick to these rules myself if I thought all fans were being treated equally.

If this really is the big safety issue the club make it out to be then surely they ought to be dealing with it swiftly in order to avoid any possibility of an away fan taking legal action against the club in the event of a standing related incident.

Once again I would request that STAR ask the club how many Villa fans were 'quietly ejected when they went into the concourse' for persistently standing.

Once again I am pretty confident that the club will tell STAR that they aren't able/prepared to give them that information.

Why the secrecy?

Could it be that it they were to reveal the figure, it would show their explanation as to how they handle the problem to be the lie that some of us suspect?

We are having the time of our lives in our first season in the premiership and all you can think about is moaning about people standing in the away end.I don't give a toss weather they are standing or sitting , I go to watch the team not them.

If this were purely about saying they ought to be sitting down then I'd agree it would be a bit childish. However I too would like to stand throughout the game. I happen to prefer standing to watch a football match. However we're told that the reason we can't is a matter of health and safety. The question I ask is simply, if this is so why is the club not equally as concerned about the safety of away fans?

Today I was stood in the queue for the concourse bar and a guy in front of me was spirited away by a couple of stewards. I do hope it wasn't just for standing.

Seriously - what do you want them to do? ANd don't just say that you want them to enforce the rule - how exactly do you envisage this happening?

Get those in the front row to sit, and then work your way up the stand.

The club are apparently trying this tactic, which seems logical...
However with large numbers of away fans all wanting to stand, it might just make more sense to let them stand.
Its not us that will suffer if they get punished for persistant standing.

As I've said, we're told time and time again that this is a big safety issue. If it really is then perhaps the game should be halted until people sit down. Now of course I'm not really advocating that, it would clearly be ridiculous. However it's about time clubs and the ruling bodies admitted that standing in all seater stadiums is not unsafe and actually started to talk sensibly about how they're going to allow those who want to stand do so.

At City last week it was exactly the opposite, the Reading fans were subjected to police state rules and the home fans stood with impunity for the whole game.

But overall I dont really care, I'll happily sit down all game as long as we win.

Right. Here you go. There was a very sizeable presence of police at today's game. Instead of paying the Keystone Kops good money to point their poxy camera in the faces of home supporters, how about getting them to help enforce the ground regulations?

I am sure that the Safety Officer is able to direct PA announcements specifically at the South Stand. That being the case, make some announcements warning the visiting supporters that they are breaking the regulations and that if they continue they will be ejected. Then, if necessary, send in the tangos and TVP. I'm pretty sure a few high profile ejections will send out a strong message to the rest, most of whom won't be relishing a fight/being arrested.

I'm sure some will argue that this will spark trouble but is that really what the rule of law in this country is about? Threaten to cause trouble and we will let you do what you like?!

Out of interest PieEater, did the police state at City lead to a riot from the Reading fans or did they largely comply with the regulations?
