Why didn't he just do what any poor schoolboy would have done and got this mate to distract him while he bundles the whole box in to his school bag. Then he wouldn't have to wait until he was 30 to do it! Not saying it is the sort of thing I would have done because it is stealing...

I know someone who refuses to pay for scotch eggs at service stations; insisting with strange logic that they are too small to pay for.

First World Cup memories for me from 78. Archie Gemell's goal against Holland, the whole Willie Johnstone drugs scandal and not really understanding what was going on as an 8 year old, and the final, Mario Kempes, the ticker tape and the posts with black bands around the bottom.

For me, watching Brazil in Mexico 70 was a cathartic experience - even as a 13-year old. The greatest team ever, of which there is no doubt. Given the occasion, Pele's dummy against Mazurkiewicz in the semi against Uruguay is the most amazing piece of skill I have ever seen and I have never seen anyone attempt it since. Something consolable in the fact that he eventually missed and made me realise that he was just a mere mortal. Still, the closest to a footballing God that there has ever been and will ever be.

So many other memories of 70 as well: Rivelino's free kicks; Muller's goals; Banks's save; Astle's miss (how the fu ck did he NOT score!); Clodoadlo's dummies; Gerson's long ball for Pele to score against the Czechs; Carlos Alberto's goal (despite the bobble from hell); the West Germany/Italy semi (my brother went to bed when it was 1-1!); Petras prostrating himself after scoring against Brazil; Felix's muppet goalkeeping; Beckenbauer's arm in a sling and he still played on; Peter Bonetti ; Uwe Seeler's amazing leaps and headers; hoping, just hoping that Jairzinho would score in the final; Riva's deadly left peg.

Was kind of aware of a tournament going on in 78 but due to a combination of me being 7, the World Cup being held half way around the World and being played at silly times and England not being in it kind of dampened my exposure to it. Remember the ticker tape more than the football itself.

82 is the first tournament that I have clear memories of. Narey's goal, the whole Keegan saga - will he play, won't he play, Brazil v Italy - one of the finest games of football ever, Northern Ireland down to 10 men but still beating the hosts, the introduction of Maradona to the wider world, the introduction of Maradona's studs to a pair of Brazilian testicles, Poland having a decent team, Schumacher vs Battiston and Tardelli's eye popping goal celebration in the final.

Honestly, Felix never stuck in my memory (I just had to look him up). Rivelino did, and appears in my list.

1998 saw France emerge victorious which unified the whole nation with many of the players having contrasting backgrounds. Ronaldo-gate took center stage on the day of a very one-sided final. I stll remember from an England point of view watching the Tunisia game at school with it being an early afternoon kick off.

Opening memory from 2002 is the holders France getting beaten by Senegal in the opening game of the tournament, thanks to a goal from Papa Boupa Diop. Real big shock at the time but the French had a woeful tournament and massively failed to live up to the tag of favourites. The best story to emerge from that tournament was the return to form of Ronaldo, the greatest finisher of my generation by an absolutely country mile. His goals and performance made up for 1998 where he had a stinker in the final. England memories were Ferdinand getting a £30million move on the back of his display and watching England Argentina in the Westside on the Tilehurst Road (whatever that use to be called)

2006 was a great occasion to be part of, having seen 3 games out there and touted another set of tickets for a huge profit. Shame England didn't reach the SF's as I had a ticket for that. The Germans were a great host nation and achieved so much with the squad of players they had available. Plenty of dissapointments from teams, especially from the Czech Republic who 2 years previously had given such a good showing at Euro 2004 and didn't turn up for the the WC.

You were watching the World Cup final or the England - Tunisia game in the Retreat? I ask because I was in the Retreat for the final and I wasn't very happy.

I still remember the levels of cheating by dork-face standing in front of Roberto Carlos as he tried to run up to the ball for the free-kicks. Also, it now has turned out that ZZ was on performance enhancing drugs at the time.

England vs Argentina in the Retreat was memoROFLable, a brilliant night and it remains my favourite England game ever; that sending off, that Owen goal, that brilliantly clever Argie freekick. When Sol Campbell headed home a goal which was (rightly) disallowed thanks to Shearer's stray elbow, the pub was like a terrace. People were falling on top of each other, dancing on tables, it was like a crowd surge. Then my mate nudged me to say "it's been disallowed" so I leaped onto a table myself and waved my arms around to try and break up the celebrations. I then turned around to see Argentina on the edge of our box from the resultant free kick . When the Batty penalty was missed a shower of empty glasses flew over our heads against the wall and it was time to leave .

Another good post btw...1970 had so many dramatic moments and great visuals. Living in black and white England and buying a colour tv in time for that tournament really would have been a bit special...
