Fifa said Thrive Eternal was expected to lead the proposed investor group for FFE.

Thrive is an American venture capital firm founded by Joshua Kushner - the brother of US President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared.

This doesn't sound like a plan Infantino came up with if nobody else in FIFA knew about it, so the Kushners must have seen the $$$ and persuaded him to launch it.

While football is greedy and corrupt, episodes like this and the ESL show there are apparently limits to what rich owners, private equity funds etc., can get away with.

I am sceptical around whats happened with the ESL. The proposal was for 6 english clubs to go in, and it would be one big league table. Well the Champions League now has been turned into one big league table and there are 6 english teams in it.

I get that it was the no relegation/closed shop approach that mostly wrangled with people, and we don't have that now, but the extra places beyond 4 was done to satisfy the big clubs and help them if they looked like missing out, and it would be no surprise if there were more extra places added ('5 years in a row and then miss out? Here have our long term reward spot in the CL' etc)

I think because its been english teams getting the extra spots and because we are going through a spell of english teams doing well in Europe, people haven't picked up on whats been happening

There are 4 spots in the CL guaranteed for English clubs. UEFA have also granted two performance spots to the competition as a whole which are awarded to countries based on UEFA’s metric detailing each country’s overall performance in Europe per season. Currently one of those spots is granted to England, thus whoever finishes 5th gets that “performance spot” (the second spot is currently awarded to Spain).

If Villa had finished 5th last season instead of 4th then England would also have had Bournemouth in the CL this season as Villa won the UEFA Cup thing and qualified for the CL that way too

The main problem with the ESL was not that it protected the big sides, but pulled up the drawbridge for everyone else. Wasn't the plan 20 teams with 15 or permanent members, so hardly any scope for someone like Villa to Atalanta to qualify.

While the new CL format has given the big clubs a lot of protection, smaller clubs can still have realistic ambitions of crashing the party.

After Wenger coming out today to deny all knowledge of the scheme everyone in FIFA except Gianni seems to be in the dark, so you have to ask where did it come from and who initiated it?

There is no shortage of issues regarding FIFA. Let me start by clarifying what some of these are from an FA perspective, in particular that of Jordan going into a World Cup for the first time.
We are a small country with a minimal budget for our FA and had to deal with enormous hurdles.

First, getting our fans into the USA: not all were granted VISAS, even though they had tickets -which we also know were sold at exorbitant prices.

Secondly, we are being taxed by the US govt through FIFA for our participation. Money that should go to players and staff. This was not the case for those who played and set up camp in Canada and Mexico. But we happened to be in the USA so now we face these huge costs in taxes for having participated.

Thirdly we have been waiting for reward money for our players since December for the Arab cup in Qatar, which is a FIFA event. The money our team should receive for having reached the final has not been delivered yet, while at the same time FIFA brags about how many billions they have in reserve.

It is clear the problem really is with leadership. For months, FIFA has been refusing to help us on any of these or other matters- until it was verbally communicated to me during the World Cup that if I endorsed Infantino it would go a long way to helping our FA out.

We pride ourselves in Jordan in upholding ethical values. We did not endorse him before and certainly will not now. But the whole situation amounts to blackmail and we refuse to give in to that.
