Ok, so I'm now prepared to admit that after a season of him being here, I was wrong about Williams, and that I perhaps made my judgement too early on him. Plus it seems he was carrying quite a few knocks through the season.

He's staying (or at least wants to)

http://www.getreading.co.uk/sport/footb ... ng-7086416

Danny Williams has pledged his future to Reading despite seeing the club miss out on promotion to the Premier League.

The United States international has been a huge hit in his first campaign with Royals, finishing third in the player of the season vote behind Jordan Obita and Chris Gunter.

And the midfielder, one of just a few Reading players with a long-term contract, insists Saturday’s failure to secure a play-off spot will not lead to him moving on this summer.

“I’m comfortable in this club,” said the 25-year-old. “I’ve made friends here.

“In the area I live I really feel comfortable. I think that’s important.

“Everybody wants to play in the Premier League but I didn’t sign for four years for no reason.”

Williams added: “The fans welcomed me very well.

“Everybody has been great with me – the team, the gaffer, the staff.

“I feel comfortable that I can play football here.

“Unfortunately I was dealing with injuries. It was frustrating, especially at the end of the season when we had important games.

“So over the summer I just have to focus on getting my knee straight so I can come back against next season.”

Williams arrived at Reading from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in June last year.

And he admits he is more than happy with his first campaign in England, despite the persistent injuries which have disrupted his year.

“When I’m fit and healthy I think I’ve shown that I can be an important player for this club,” he said.

“Sometimes it’s gone well for me, sometimes it hasn’t.

“But I would say I’m very happy with my first season here in Reading.

“That’s why I’m looking forward to more.”

High earner reluctant to leave. Hmm. Drenthe has said the same...

Where else are they going to be paid the money they're on?

I like both as players but when we're trying to cut cloth at the rate we supposedly are, then they both need to go really.

Ian Royal Williams strikes me as fairly similar to Sidwell, but a little less hard. An all rounder. Decent going forward, passing, shooting, hassling and tackling. A bit weak on the ball sometimes.

As so often has been the case since the Sidwell and Harper partnership broke up, we seem to have two pieces of a midfield triumvirate that can't quite meld into a successful partnership. It's symptomatic of the problem we've had in the squad for the same length of time. We're still very much in Rodgers' transition. We keep trying to break away into a more dynamic passing side, but we can't quite make the leap and have half a squad set up ready to play a more traditional 4-4-2 and half a squad trying to move on to something different.

And the end result is bitty performances and mostly seasons of not quite getting there. Bar a few superb good runs under McDermott (generally when we rejected the move towards change and were more conservative - which can rarely perform long-term). None of which actually lasted much more than six months.

I like Williams. I'm not convinced by him. But he's got plenty about him and it can take a season or two for even a quality player to find their feet and the right partnership to thrive. He's certainly worth keeping around.

FWIW I always felt that Sidwell and Harper were two players that couldn't do it as a pair but only with a third player alongside them. Obviously, this was wrong in '05-'06 but it suggests something else changed that subtly changed how the two players functioned.

Williams? I think he looks potentially superb. A fair few injuries this season? Maybe to be expected.

If there's one excuse that people constantly allow Nigel a pass with it's that a fully fit Bruno would have been a massive boost to our chances this year. He's a quality player and by all accounts a real boost to the dressing room, very glad to hear he's sticking around, not sure how him liking where he lives is relevant though seen as he lives in London

Maybe we can tell all the players who are on high salaries that we don't want them. That should improve their performances and attitude.

Extended-Phenotype Is Williams a Nigel signing or an Anton signing?

When he was fit and playing pretty well he was a Nigel signing, when he was injured he was an Anton signing

I can't see why he would be an Anton signing, not a big name, not a russian connection, or family friend I doubt. So I think Nigel had a say in this
