I think you have to make a decision. You either pick a system, then put the right players in the right positions, or you pick the best players and work out a system to fit them. McLaren hasn't really managed to do either.

The best players don't always make the best team and wont guarantee you results. Wayne Rooney might be the best player we have, but if the manager prefers a system that doesn't fit him in, then he'll have to miss out.

England don't have a Didier Drogba, so if Mourinho did get the job, he may not go for that formation. Owen is our best goalscorer and I don't think that he'd necessarily fit into a 4-5-1 either.

I'm not sure.

I think he might do well on the playing side but I'd hate to see an England team turn out like Chelsea. Playing with such arrogance and employing such intimidation and historonics to get their way as opposed to winning through the football they were/are obvioulsy capable of playing.

I want the England manager to have a bit of dignity about him too and I'm not sure if the totally enigmatic Mourinho can do that. It's hard to say though, perhaps the last 18 months of his time at Chelsea was shaped more the turmoil behind the scenes and he is a lot more balanced if left alone.

I've no doubt he'd build a more effective team than McLaren though.

He is perhaps the outstanding candidate.

I would still rather see an Englishman managing the team. Not just through a misplaced desire for the England manager to be English, I just have some empathy with the arguement that if the players have to be eligable to play for a country then so should the manager.

Russia coach Guus Hiddink has attacked Steve McClaren's tactics following his side's Euro 2008 qualifying success over England in Moscow.

Dutchman Hiddink said: "You could see in the first half that we had two strikers and they were playing with Lescott rather inside as a central defender with Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell.

"In the first half we had a lot of space on the right side and so we could penetrate there, although our attacking was not fine-tuned, we still had that threat.

"That was why I changed it at half-time. They were vulnerable that side. And I like making Jole Cole a left full-back as you get rid of one of their attackers. It created a two-on-one situation. That is why we could damage them."

Big Sam has shown that he can handle star names in Campo,Hierro,Diouf,Okocha and Anelka so I see no reason why he couldn't bring the best out of our prima donnas.
He has a reputation for long-ball football but I get the impression that with a wider choice of players available he would advocate a passing game.

McLaren was a poor choice in the first place and we know that if we manage to scrape through this fairly easy group he would be kept on for the finals-then we would have all the hype and debates about Beckham playing,somebody would play despite having a broken leg.........f*** it come on Russia get Roman to bung a few sovs (apologies ) to the Israelis and spare us the ignominy of crashing out in the quarter-finals.

Failure to qualify just might make the players have a re-think about their own ability(possibly) making them work that bit harder and a new manager would have a bit of time with a squad that has had a full Summer's rest and raring to qualify for the next World Cup.
