Isnt this a bit of a non event really. 'Local' company try to gain some training experience for their equipment. Approach football club, get permission nto try on a big stage. Club let people know what is happening, therefore anyone with half an ounce knows not to bring it.

It would have been more outrageous if the club hadnt made this public knowledge, but would have served GIS/ ICTS (whoever they are - I cant find any trace of them on the web apart from publicity links) better.

End result keyboard warriers getting up in arms and complain and get the oppurtunity taken away from the local company. Local company and RFC who have tried to be open and honest receive bad publicity for supporting a community issue - community in the wider sense - not stereotyping football supporters.

FWIW, if it had been kept secret, I doubt very much that they would have had very much - if any - success anyway.

I can see the point, if nothing else it demonstrates to those behind the scenes the efficiency and likely problems that would arise from employing these measures at big events.

But as it would do no more in the public eye than tarnish football supporters even more with a wholly unecessary and undeserved label then its good thats its been dropped.

Exactly. This country pisses me off. Oh no, we can't clamp down on illegal drug use because it might upset a few people with nothing better to do than complain about every little thing. No wonder the streets of Lower Earley are teeming with teenage crime.

No problem whatsoever, and due to my near daily contact with various controlled substances, I would likely be sniffed out.

PS - dont think they would have used the dogs to smell the drugs in moving cars .... that is probably a step to far for your average springer.....

If they're that worried, why not walk their wonderful dogs somewhere where there is a real drug problem (certainly not your average football ground) to prove what a good scheme they have!!

In reality, this initiative would have made **ck all difference to drug problems in Reading and would only have served to further tarnish the image of football supporters, the overwhelming majority of whom are (despite what the politicians and media would try to have us believe) decent law-abiding citizens.

FWIW I'm damn glad that the PC brigade won this - next stop ID cards! And for those of us with long memories, RFC sucked up to the midget Moynihan by IIRC being the first club to introduce ID/Membership type cards too - that really helped stamp out football related violence as promised - not!

Maybe the company has certain Directors that we are not aware of with a link to RFC.

If so, certain said Directors were bang out of order trying to impose such a scheme on their supporters/customers.

Football has enough bad publicity without it seeking to take on the adverse drug problem publicity that belongs far more with nightclubs, gigs, pubs etc.

I will welcome this to Madejski when the trial is simultaneous with ones at Royal Ascot and National Opera.

So illegal drugs and football problems in terms of specific drugs and their threat level:

Herbage: doesn't exaclty start a riot, does it?
Extasy: not noted for cuasing aggression
Smack: emaciated, sleepy, rubbish in a fight
Coke: act like a moster: to be discouraged.

Now then drugs that turn people proper nasty:

Crystal Meth, Crack: Use usually involves the kind of financial commitment not really compatible with tickets to Premiership matches.
Alcohol: Evil drug that fuels a conservative 70% of all violent crime, and is inextricably linked with violence at football. Widely available.
