I still can't quite believe Tony Dorigo made that squad. I can remember the sinking feeling every time he got thrown on as sub "how the fcuk is that gonna help?"

Not sure about this Baines led nostalgia over the 1990 team. Are people forgetting we were essentially pretty rubbish and incredibly lucky to reach the semis?

We scraped through our group with 1 win courtesy of a 1-0 set piece victory over EGYPT.

We then fluked past Belgium with a last min winner after they dominated. BELGUIM.

This was followed by diving our way past Cameroon.

Finishing off with our ONE good performance. When we still went out to Germany.

Don't get me wrong it was an epic semi final, and I loved Gascoigne, Waddle, Lineker, Beardo & Platt. But we played 5 at the back and really weren't that good.

We had a series of close matches in which we did enough, until we came up against the Germans and didn't quite do enough (their goal was also pretty lucky).

Also, I was comparing the 1990 team to the current team, so they're bound to look good by comparison.

I'd love to see your midfield play! (I'd hate to be part of a 4 man defence behind it.)

If we were playing 4 4 2, I'd probably prefer Butcher over John Terry, but perhaps there isn't a great deal in it.

I think that for a lot of people, Italia 90 was their first proper WC where they were able to go down the pub and watch the games etc so will always hold a nostalgic place for people

Serious? The three centre backs (italic) were all monsters. So much so that Tony Adams didn't get into the squad.
Lineker was one of the best strikers in Europe. Waddle was one of the best wingers in Europe.
Platt and Gascoigne coming through.

Yeah, there's some odd choices to build up the squad (Steve Bull was meant to be signing for Aston Villa that summer, I've read somewhere) but the core is actually superb. Also - players that had played abroad giving the side a bit of extra nous = not a bad thing.

Belgium had finished 4th in the previous World Cup and had some genuinely classy players - the keeper, Scifo.
Just because they're pish now, doesn't mean that they were always pish.

Michel Preudhomme was the keeper. Jan Cuelemanns (sp) was also a big player for them. Likewise Marc DeGriyse and Frankie Van Der Elst.

Anyways, it's tournament football and we only lost one game from 6 and that was on penalties. So there.

Cameroon was memorable, as was the Belgian game, as was the Dutch game.
Guess you had to have been there or not a teenager etc, etc.

Platt's winner against Belgium will probably always be in my 'top 10 football moments'. Absolutely sublime.
