ITV has been quite helpful this afternoon - the live feed on their website was about 10 secs behind the radio commentary so have had that on and switched to the ITV pictures whenever anything interesting happened.

To be fair he's better than Adebayor on the BBC. He speaks pigeon English with an accent that can be difficult to understand, and his punditry is limited to stating the bloody obvious.

BTW, what is it with those French players and African countries - They showed Desailly celebrating Ghana's goal and I thought, are you French or what?

It's quite simple.

Commercial broadcasters exist to deliver viewers to their sponsors, not to deliver quality programming that their viewers want. One might lead to the other, but not always. But as the people who pay them are teh sponsors, and only indirectly the viewing audience, guess who gets the biggest say on a day-to-day basis?

Public service broadcasters exist to deliver quality programming to their viewers.

Not quite that simple.

The worse ITV's coverage, the less viewers they get for games - especially later in the tournament when they go head to head and get trounced by BBC.

Therefore their viewing number are much lower, meaning lowers TVRs, which equals lower value of advertising spot, making them far less attractive for advertisers (and their TV buyers) and ultimately far lower ad revenues.

If the quality of programming was higher they could achieve far greater revenue. It always makes me astonished to see how poor their sport productions are (especially bearing in mind their budgets are comparable to BBC sport).

True, I was dumbing down and over-simplifying, which is essentially what ITV tend to do.

I'm aware you very much know what you're talking about in this area (*) - would you agree that for ITV it tends to be all about attaining sheer numbers rather than the demographics of the audience? Perhaps that's just a reflection of the typical products which latch onto football on TV for advertising. For them it's very much lowest common denominator, mass-market stuff, rather than anything quality-orientated.

It's an African world cup, so they need black pundits, because being black makes you an expert on African football.....or so the thinking goes in TV land. Still, I guess it's an improvement on having pundits who are immediately out of their depth if asked a question not about premier league players

Far too much un-related blurb last night after the Italy game and the highlights package on BBC2 needs a serious looking at. Nowhere near enough game action (forgive me is there was none and they were trying to fill the time) and as mentioned previously, I really don't give a rats arse about a bus travelling around SA.

The producers should take a leaf out of the GP shows; proper in depth anaylsis, plenty of highlights, decent "experts". Jake is a bit of a cock, but he's streets ahead of Colin Murray.

Still, BBC > AIDS > ITV
