Nah, he pretty much transformed British Cycling, a sport he fully understood, and deserves full credit for that. He's just been shite when branching out into other sports.

Or he just happened to be in charge when a cohort of good riders came through (and then the questions about doping etc).

In a similar manner is Southgate a good coach (creating the culture for success) or did he just get lucky with draws in major comps (which he did)

No, he turned it from a bumbling amateurish outfit into a properly run professional place (there's an argument that it went too far in the pursuit of medals over anything else). I'd say lottery money was more important in allowing that to happen that the athletes. We've always produced decent cyclists but they never had the structure in place to help them excel unless they were truly exceptional especially on the road.

That Ratcliffe is a piece of work isn’t he?

Tottenham have filed High Court proceedings against Manchester United co-owners Ineos.

An Ineos statement read: "Ineos Automotive has been a partner of Tottenham Hotspur since 2022, expanding on a partnership agreement that Ineos Group had in place with the club since 2020.

"We have a contractual right to terminate our partnership contract and in December 2024 exercised that right."

Do they?

In March, it was announced Ineos had reached a settlement with New Zealand Rugby in relation to a six-year sponsorship deal that started in 2022.

NZR launched legal proceedings against Ineos in the previous month, alleging that the British company failed to pay the first instalment of its 2025 sponsorship fee having chosen to end the deal early.

Is there something in the Manchester air that makes for basket case clubs?

Pleading no money and asking the public purse if it can contribute for their new plastic bowl yet able to spaff £60m+ on Cunha, try and persuade Mbuemo not to go to Spurs and supposedly start talks with Ekitike’s agent over a €100m transfer all while not actually selling anyone of any note, United really are becoming the new City in terms of attracting people’s derision. Hope the PL will be taking very careful interest in Utd’s accounts.

Napoli president:
"Garnacho’s got pace, flair and potential, but that’s not even why we want him. We want him because he’s at United. Get him out and he becomes twice the player. There’s a fault at United that I can’t explain"

Just look at McTominay. Totally different player.

Must be another round of redundancies at OT soon as Utd seem about to sign Sesko for €85m

Still end up playing Maguire at centre forward and lobbing the ball into the box.
If only they had bought a few attacking players...............................................oh.

Did you watch the game?
From the few glances that I had Maguire was grappling in the opposition box.

BTW , Maguire replacing Shaw-is this 2020 or is it 2025?

Just had a quick look for a heatmap for him, but couldn't find one. You might be right, just need to check.

Shaw, Maguire, and Casemiro are the type of players Utd would love to shift off the books. Difficult to do as they were awarded ridiculous contracts by the previous management regime. Out of interest, how long are Salah and VVD's new contracts?

I'm not sure but I think it is 2 further years beyond this season.

Mo in particular looks as though he could even match Ronaldo for fitness and VVD hardly breaks into a sweat so they could well remain near to or at the top of their game for quite some time yet.
These two do fit into the too often overused "world class" category IMHO and they really can't be compared to the likes of Shaw (particularly because of his injury record) or Maguire.

Man Utd are in the fortunate position when compared with any other club than Real Madrid that, because they are minted from long term merchandising, they can almost just keep on buying until they eventually get it right.
Fortunately for the rest of the teams in England the "getting it right" still looks to be a long way off.
