I really don't buy that.

I'm sure they wouldn't scare half as easily as that and they can afford whatever security they wanted if it was really required. I'm sure it was more a case of turn up in the morning and he got what he was asking for (both ££ and in assurances on the way the squad was going) and so agreed to sign.

He back himself into a corner maybe and coupled with being pissed off with his form and the World Cup just went off on one. The only thing against that is the bit where contract talks were stopped in August and this had been hushed up since then.

It was only Rooney's apparent strop and confrontation with Fergie over the ankle non-injury that brought this out into the open.

Every week football at the highest level gets a little less appealing.

Mind you, with Windsor & Eton struggling to come through financial crisis there's not a lot to enthuse about the integrity at any level of the game.

And as the economic woes are set to continue for a number of years I'm curious as to whether supporters will rebel against the seemingly never ending supply of dosh being handed to the top "stars" or will it just be seen as a bit of fantasy that is outside of the real world? Maybe the fans will find the money no matter what just to maintain that escapism.
