I think it was as a result of the Steve Clarke initiative to "improve" the atmosphere at the stadium around March time.

Actually, it was Steve Clarke's initiative to give the fans someone else to moan about instead of Nick Blackman, thereby allowing his game to flourish.
He's going to try and repeat this on a larger scale by getting Rolf Harris out on day release to do the golden gamble to take the heat away from Hal Robson-Kanu when he comes on as a sub.
