it would be a miracle to go up this season, no new signings as of yet, even with ones coming in soon they won't have had time to integrate with the team and could face a slow start, even strengthening in January probably won't be enough.!

So would you agree that Neil Innes was actually the most talented of the Bonzos? Although Stanshall was undoubtedly the more famous, Innes' oeuvre was much more diverse I feel.

Whilst i don't doubt the assertion about the Russians, this statement is incorrect. Different circumstances when they were in charge, different point in Cox's career, we were also going into a different league when they were spending. So no, it tells us nothing about the previous owners.

I would have thought someone would pay £2-3m for Pog.

If we let him go on a free, even though a new club may not match his current wages, I'd have thought that a Golden Hello of £2-3m would mean he covers whatever wage shortfall he might have over the period of a contract.

Nobody likes selling an asset for nothing but if we really want to get him off the payroll then I'm sure it could be done. He has no value on the Balance Sheet as nothing was paid for him, so it wouldn't have any real or cosmetic impact in the short term, but it would reduce the overhead.

Just a thought. Same applies with Drenthe I suppose.

IIRC, clubs are not allowed to list players as assets (or liability!) on the balance sheets anymore as people can not be owned, however like staff working for any company they can be an intangible asset.... so while a club may make a £20m loss one season and have £20m less cash assets at the bank as a result, the accounts don't show that they now have £20m worth of players on the books.

That's not the really case RB. An intangible asset has a value on the Balance Sheet. In the case of players, the signing on fees are shown as Intangible Assets, written off over the period of their contract.

I'll give you an example - if we had signed Pog for £5m on a 5 year contract, at the end of Yr 1 he would have a value of £4m on the Balance Sheet, Yr 2 would be £3m etc. etc.

However, you cannot revalue a player, so in the case of Obita - Nil cost, but if we sell him for £5m, we would have a "surplus on player trading" (I think that's how it's described in the accounts) of £5m, which would be reflected in the overall P&L a/c in the year in which we sold him. (Actually, thinking about it, I can't remember off the top of my head whether the £5m would be shown in one hit whether it was an instalments arrangement or not. I think it is, but I'd have to check that out to be certain.) But we certainly can't say now, oh he's worth £5m, let's add that to the Balance Sheet...

The fact is that we have some players for whom there will be zero value on the Balance Sheet, who in reality are worth a million or few (homegrowns and free transfers in) so the position on the Balance Sheet is probably not reflective of the true value in the club.

Same for everybody of course.

A couple of months ago, I suggested that we could probably raise £20m on a bit of a fire sale if needed, and that would have wiped out most of the debt. I know selling off your players is easier said than done but the fact that that was never kickstarted or even suggested always suggested to me that things were never as bleak as some repeatedly suggested.
