Gerrard quietly going about a good start to his time at Villa, that defeat to Brentford notwithstanding. United at home this week, which is winnable, after which they don't play a side in the current top 8 until the middle of March - and their signings of Coutinho and Digne should help them climb the table. Should get Leon Bailey back from injury some time soon too.

Think he will end up regretting the City move, he is not going to be played to his strengths there under Pep imo. I really think Spurs should have broken the bank for him, I firmly believe Grealish needs to be "the man" at any club he is at and he would be at Spurs along with Kane. He'd have had so much more freedom there.

Still, it took Mahrez a while to settle in and he was certainly the main man at Leicester so time is still on his time. Not sure I agree about Spurs as Grealish plays in the same spot as Son and he isn’t going to dismantle him

The funny thing was, there were direct quotes from Coutinho after the move that he did it to win trophies.

I've written before about how the 'romance' seems to have disappeared from football. All now seems to be about finding a road to one of those 3 or 4 super-clubs. Where is the fun in that? Gerrard might never have won a league title, but the sense of pride he must take in dragging was wasn't a great Liverpool side to a CL win must be huge. Don't get me wrong, I get it at a base level - medals are good, winning things is good. But if you personally don't do much for that win, is it the same? Maybe I'm the naive one, but I can't see Grealish getting as much from his career from a personal perspective at City than if he had stayed at Villa and helped to (say) drag them to an FA Cup win, or a spot in Europe. He will of course coin it though from a financial perspective.

I have also wondered the same, but we wonder that from a position of being on the outside and with hindsight (due to our respective ages). If I was mid 20's and had spent my time since I was about 14 in an environment which continually hammered home the idea of success meaning everything, then I may have felt differently

Not the greatest example, if he'd started at say Tranmere instead of Liverpool how many seasons do you reckon he'd have been content dragging them up towards the Premier League instead of moving to a top 4 club?

LFC sells to Barcelona, who loan him to Bayern. He then scores two goals against Barcelona which not only puts them out but advances Bayern, who then go on to win the CL. This activates another £5million (CL WInner) clause that goes to Liverpool from Barcelona

The total transfer fee is almost all paid up too as the majority of add ons were apparently based on blocks of 15 match appearances. It is by far and away the largest transfer fee a British club has ever received

I'm a little surprised that Liverpool didn't come back in for him tbh. They really need some extra creativity in forward positions, little bit weak in terms of squad depth. Not many other players out there of Coutinho's quality that you can pick up for £30m.

It's a great example. Boyhood club, and relatively speaking, Gerrard barely won a thing.

It is really odd. There are a number of pretty decent forwards in England and Europe that you could pick up for between £25m-£40m. When were Newcastle taken over? November? They have had that amount of time to get a proper scouting system in place and indentify targets to help them fight relegation and Chris Wood is the best they could come up with?
