Although I do have some sympathy for the OP, even with an overnight stay you're looking at seriously reduced drinking time even if you can knock off work early of a Friday.

Actually you can get two advance singles (i.e., there and back), certainly on a Saturday, for £40. Not sure what point you're trying to make here

Admittedly I didn’t put loads of work into it and just looked at the normal return prices on a Saturday, which are £75.60 so for those who might not be as clued up on how to get cheaper train travel would suffer.

As Green said, make a weekend of it. Cardiff has some great pubs and the castle is pretty neat.

In my case that's unfortunately not possible so I'll be missing out
