Stephen Hunt - if he had brains he'd be dangerous

by floyd__streete » 26 Dec 2006 01:33

I do not intend for this to turn into another debate about the merits or otherwise of dear old Hunty, but I was perturbed upon perusing the News of The World yesterday to see yet another "I do not fear Stamford Bridge cauldron of hate" type article lifted from what presumably was a reasonably extensive interview with our impish left-winger.

The reason that I am rather irritated by this latest in a steady stream of recent journalistic output regarding Hunt is three-fold. Firstly, it further fans the flames of the Jose Mourinho media furnace, secondly Hunt has nothing to apologise for or to comment further on following what 100% of credible observers deemed to be an accidental collision in a football match and thirdly why do we have to further hype a situation of frankly something-and-nothing potetntial; having visited Abramovich-era Stamford Bridge in person for a Champions League match courtesy of a freebie, I can assure you that the only thing that the regular Chelsea home supporter is likely to get truly uppity about is the refreshment bar running out of Chardonnay at half time.

Hunt, imho, is very midsjudged in coming out and having a fair amount to say to the press at this time. A simple no comment, nothing further to add to what has already been said would have been sufficient so as he could wholly concentrate on the performance of both himself and the team as they try and play their way out of a bad patch rather than get himself worked up about it all. You can only assume that Steve Coppell - who wanted no more said about the matter even when those entirely pathetic death-threats were received - won't be impressed about it all and you have to wonder why the manager, himself a self-admitted media-shy person, hasn't offered the player a bit more guidance in this instance.

Hunty and Sonks have been unjustifiably under the media cosh in the weeks preceeding this game.

The whole Reading Team should lay a wreath in the centre circle of Stamford Bridge

Not only to acknowledge the death of this great game (as we used to enjoy it)

But also for the "death of a clown" , namely Moronho (over to you Frimmers RR etc),

Quite. Further proof-positive were it ever needed that The Premiership (Best League In The World TM  ) is the most over-hyped circus since Big Brother (Davina McCall presented tv show, as opposed to Orwell novel).

In the NOTW interview with Petr Cech on Sunday at no point during the interview was it asked "How do you feel towards Stephen Hunt?" Another chance wasted to defuse the situation. But as always with Murdoch and Sky they want to hype up what is on paper an ordinary looking Boxing Day fixture.

a couple of pretty inflamatory pieces by Oliver Holt in The Mirror. I wonder if he has Chelsea leanings as he was about the only supposedly serious columnist to come out and say Hunt meant to injure Cech.

I mean, he's devoting two pages to asking why "shamefully" Hunt didn't visit Cech, yet despite getting quotes from him relating to the match, didn't think once to ask him for his reason for not doing so.

Today's Daily Star has a Lampard interview going on about how angry he is that Hunt didn't visit Cech in hospital.... I understand both Hunt and Sonko wrote to the keepers and neither received a reply, whatsmore they both tried to contact Chelsea and got nowhere.

I'm really pleased that Coppell took the decision to drop Hunt and match the Chelsea line-up in midfield-in fact in the first-half Doyle was playing almost left-midfield and support striker.
Hunt has not contributed much recently and it was only a matter of time before we started playing with just the one-winger.
The tactics worked today and I expect the same system next week.
