Alex Pearce - Update

by Proud to be a Cobbler » 19 Mar 2007 19:22

Hello all, Northampton Town fan here. I'm sure you are all aware that we have 18 year old defender Alex Pearce on loan from you Royals.

I'm also sure you'll be happy to know that since Pearce has been here he has superbly sloted into our central defensive back 3 and has never looked back. He made his debut in a 1-0 defeat away to Nottingham Forest in front of nearly 25,000 and he never even batted an eyelid.

He is one of a footballing defender that we have been missing for quite a while. Any chance we can have him permanently?

In fact, this was the thread on our forum, The Hotel End when news was announced we have him until the end of the season.

Excellent feedback. Every single one of them seems hugely impressed with him. Perhaps they'd like Bennett for a couple of months at the start of next season.

I went to the youth cup match when our lads spanked Coventry. Pearce, along with James Henry, looked the outstanding prospect. Great that he is learning his trade playing in a tough league, it'll make a man out of him.

No chance of Pearce staying there - he is going to be a Prem player for us - guaranteed.

He also has his head screwed on - he turned up to watch the first Royals reserve game after he went on loan ad paid through the turnstiles with everyone else. Feet on the ground and no pretensions.

dazza Wouldnt it be nice if we could sign permantly

Any more talk like that and we'll have him back before the end of the season. I see that Stuart Gray has also been saying good things about Pearce.

Not sure about you keeping hold of him after this season. Coppell seems to rate the lad and has had him travel with the squad to a few away games this term to try and get used to how things are done at first team level, and of course, the big grounds and big day outs.
Watched one of his games for you and he looked very assured and played with a swagger. A little bit of cockiness about him but then he seems to be matching it with performances!
I hope he returns a stronger and wiser player and does your club proud.
Take care of our boy!

Given the number of centre backs we've got it maybe that SC is happy to let Alex go on loan again for 6 months next season. But my guess is that will depend on a) how he does overall at Northampton and b) how he looks in pre-season.

Certainly hope he does make it into our first team eventually though.

It's probably a three way battle for two central defender positions with him, Sodje and Brown for next season

Sodje will be sold 100%, it nearly happened on transfer deadline day this year.

Although if Sodje had gone it would have been as part of a swap deal ...

I think next season we have Ivar, Sonks, Bennett, Bikey, Duberry for sure plus Brown, Pearce and Sodje. I would think 6 centre backs is plenty so suspect only one of those last 3 will be part of the first team squad and can only see Pearce as a realistic option.

Seems like there isn't much change of us keeping him beyond the end of this season, which is a shame.

However if true be told, for an 18 year old he looks too good for us anyway.

If I was manager I'd loan him out for the entire season next year to gain experience. Surely even playing for the Cobblers is better than playing for our reserves and a couple of Carling Cup matches ! Joking.

To be honest with the quality of reserve team football so terrible at the moment, I think another season of palying 1st team football is just what he needs. Not sure how many Championship sides would take a risk on a teenage center half so going back to Northampton would seem like a good option. Stuart Gray's got a great track record with youngsters too.

Interesting to see that he went to the Oratory School ("an all-boys, Catholic, boarding public school...at a basic cost of about £23,400 a year"). It's not often that you see professional footballers coming through the public school system. Do we know if he had some kind of scholarship, or if he is Reading FC's upper-class squad member?

Jamie Lambert was hardly a working class boy....

Lawrie Sanchez went to an all boy Catholic school and was the son of a diplomat

So I think young Pearce has a few rivals in the 'posh' stakes ...

Scott Taylor, Adi Williams, Stuart Lovell never went to fee paying schools.

So with Pearce we have yet more evidence of the intelligence factor in Reading's recruits I've been highlighting for a while.
