I was matching a Premier League match on Sky a couple of weeks ago and their clock counted up - I only noticed becuase I thought it was strange when we have been told rules don't allow us to do that at the Madejski.

They've said the clock can't count beyond 45 / 90

So what's the reasoning behind the clock not allowing to pass 45 / 90 minutes ?

Seems absolutley ridiculous to me.

Same reason that they can't show replays of contentious issues - in case it inflames the crowd. Can you imagine what could happen if the board shows 2 mins and a winning goal is scored against the home side with the clock showing 93:24 for example.

Time added on is the minimum time.

The ref aint gonna blow up ten minutes after the allocated time is he, unless he wants a riot

I'm fully aware of that - but once the board has gone up and the ref could play 4 mins instead of the 2 for various reasons. Only takes one idiot to overreact and you have a problem. Could you imagine the possible scenes should a club get relegated due to a goal scored after the allocated time has been played with the scoreboard clearly showing that.

Stop the clock at 90 and it's done. Christ, until a few seasons ago we didn't even have a scoreboard so unless you timed it yourself or checked your watch at kickoff you'd have had no idea how long was left - now people want to winge because the timer goes down and they don't know exactly how much injury time has been played.

from the north stand those of us with decent eyesight could not read the Prem Plus clock

we can read the "official" clock

however I am sure can point this oversight out to the club and they can stop "beaming back" the prem plus broadcast in the future

its an FA rule not a club rule. I am sure the club would love to have the clock carry on counting. Just like the "no dodgy decisions" rule on replays.. it would be much easier just to show them than have someone have to blank the screen every time there is a replay of a dodgy decisions (unless apperently you are spurs in which case you can show them at half time) or a face in the crowd or whatever other reasons they have to blank the screen

In the first half there was only 1 min of additional time, but Clattenburg let Villa take a corner with the clock on about 46:30. I mentioned it at the time and would not have been impressed had they scored.

FWIW, I like it counting down, one glance and you can see whats left, no mathematics come into the eqation at all. I hated maths.

The Football League official line on this is;

It's up to the club whether the clock counts up or down.

The Lge's / refs / club's preference is for it to count down.

RFC go along with this - rather than any fan's preference. Wycombe for instance don't.

Presume the rule is the same in the Prem.

Exactly, something could happen in extra time. i.e a foul. The game still needs to carry on for the allotted time in this case.
