You can't give different punishments to players who play in different positions.

He needs to be made an example of so as to raise the awareness of how important it is for a professional sportsman to check ALL medicines they take. The fact that it was unintentional is not an excuse.

I do think the governing bodies in sport need to start being able to differentiate between cheating and having a trace of a drug in your system through a medication etc. They are not the same and shouldn't be treated as such.

It's rather like being convicted of drink driving because you were found to have eaten a packet of wine gums.

No it doesn't. He took a banned substance through his own stupidity, and punishments like this need to be handed out so as to try and prevent others being stupid. He wants to be a professional sportsman and take the riches that comes with it so he also has to take the punishment when he breaks the rules.

You can't start making exceptions just because it was a mistake. They know the rules and they know they have to get all medications approved BEFORE they take them.

What's the problem exactly? I know that there is a bunch of banned substances and that any over the counter treatments might contain these and that failing a drug test would mean a ban and I'm not even involved in any sort of organised sport. Any sportsperson subject to the rules regarding dugs has got no excuse if they fall foul of them.

Because it provides an excuse to those who are taking it intentionally which they can use to argue their case.

The substance is banned in any quantity and EVERY sportsman knows this. Paddy Kenny didn't follow a simple process of making sure a medication was safe to take. He gets paid a lot of money to do a job he probably loves doing, it isn't really much to ask for them to follow anti-drug rules is it?

If you detect trace amounts, check their story, do more advanced tests to determine the amount taken (which would corroborate any story) and then if not guilty charge a fine to the value of the cost of the tests and tell them not be so stupid, if guilty of abuse roll out the heavy punishments.

I am still curious how a goalkeeper or whatever sportsman is going to perform better from cannabis.
To me it`s almost as puzzling as testing chessplayers for steroids(don`t laugh..this really happens).
