Reading spent 40 years at the third level from 1931-1971 (and we are about to start our next sequence!)
Arsenal have the longest unbroken run in the top division starting in 1919.

As the top flight does not count - any team beat Reading's 40 years?

I've done sone brief digging around on that one and haven't found any yet, although Southport's 45 years without promotion is worth a mention.

Bournemouth joined Div 3(S) in 1923/4 and didn't get promoted or relegated in 1969/70. Given that they didn't join the Southern League until after WWI (and didn't get promoted or relegated from that), it's quite possible that a fan born at the turn of the century could have watched them all his life,and died of old age, without ever seeing them win promotion or get relegated.

Dale defeated 1-0 by Bury tonight in the televised derby game. Hard to see how Dale are so clear at the top on that evidence, they were p*ss-awful throughout and their 15-goal striker O'Grady missed the worst sitter you will see all season. Great standard for us to look forward to watching next season .

The commentator said that Dale have only ever won one promotion in their history. I've seen 3 with RFC alone . Really hope that they don't blow up from here, still well clear though. Bury were marginally better, despite the obviosu disadvantage of fielding one of the Sodje brothers (Efe, who makes Sam look like Paulo Maldini).

Congrats to the long suffering supporters of this friendly little club, first promotion since 1969 IIRC, to put that into context RFC have managed 7 promotions of our own in that time. To think there will be a couple of generations of Dale fans who have never seen their side have much discernable success - enjoy the feeling.
