i doubt if owen could hack it at all in the premiership any more..he always was a one trick pony..lose that tiny bit of pace and you are in the defenders pocket.

He's scored a lot of headers for a player who is totally reliant on pace.

Owen was very quick as a youngster, coming into the Liverpool side at 18 - but defenders sooned wised up to that. Whilst his pace remained an asset (see his goals in the cup final vs Arsenal) the reason he has scored so many goals (including 40 for England) is his positional sense and movement, which is as good as any English striker I have watched in my lifetime.

I know it's in the embarassing marketing thing above, but I have to agree with the point that his effectiveness as a striker has been diminished in 08/09 by the role he has been asked to play. He'd be a good signing for most teams in the Premier League, and could still get 15 league goals in a full season, fairly easily imho.

Yes ..... as long as he could stay fit for the whole season. And that's a reason why I think clubs might be reluctant to take hm on.

Have to agree with comonurz, Owen still has the ability, if he is put into a decent side creating a few chances and he is used in the right way. I do think his type of player is becoming less and less common and not accomodatted by the current trend of playing variations of 4-5-1 though

Agreed currently, but I do stand by my original point that a fit Owen would be/is a better player than Doyler. I didn't realise Owen is only 4 years older than Doyler!

True - MO's problem is that he was so explosively good when he was so young, so being good now is seen as a decline.

I think that someone will take him - presumably a club that has a bad start in August and needs to do something dramatic, so will be more likely to take a risk - and even then it'll be an appearances-based contract because of his recent injury record.

No he didn't. He left Liverpool for, what, £8 million, and the reason why Liverpool didn't want him was because they didn't want to pay over double to the same club for the same player. The only other club to show real interest was Newcastle, so they were the ones that got him. Although I'm sure the reported £120kp/w helped.
