They didn't want him?
Going on a Jonothan Wilson-fest here, the Top 4 have all adopted something approaching a 4-2-3-1 in recent years, with a front striker who is fast, strong and as much of an athlete as a finisher and then a midfield three behind who break past the striker in support. The nearest thing to an old school striker is Torres but I think he's surprisingly fast, strong and deceptively good in the air. United have Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez who can all play in a range of roles. Arsenal have Adebayor whilst Arshavin, Eduardo, van Persie fit the attacking midfield three much more neatly.
Owen really doesn't fit into either mould - hence why Benitez was happy to sell, hence why he went to Newcastle and not one of the other big 4, hence why he got limited time at Real Madrid.
