Adam Johnson is an interesting one. Looked great in training, nice cameo against Mexico, but surprisingly no game time against Japan.

I wonder if Capello is holding him back for the tournament itself, in order to have at least one element of surprise in the squad that opposition coaches and full backs will not know much about.

I hope so - having a left footed player playing on the left wing is what we need.....if he was in that position Lennon was in v Japan he would have buried it.

Big mistake ommitting Walcott. Not necessarily to start, but a great player to bring on when a goal down chasing the game, getting at players with his pace. Sadly that has been lacking in the 2 friendlies, but surely worth taking.

Such a come down from Zagreb for the lad.

That would make sense.

Would be surprised if it's Wright-Phillips ahead of Walcott, but I'm pleased to see that Cole is in the squad and that he's taking one of the other central midfielders to cover for Barry if needs be.

With both Gerrard and Cole able to play a bit as the supporting forward I now think 4 forwards is probably enough, although I've always favoured taking 5 as it's more often that a player who can create or score will be important as opposed to an 8th defender.

Yeah, a guy who struggled to make it into the Villa side this year and scored 3 goals, vs Bent who scored 20+ goals this year. It's ridiculous I think.

Perhaps you should take a look at the role he's played for England over all these years and how important he's been in a lot of our successes since he got in the squad then....

Bent isn't capable of doing any better, nor is anyone else who's available, so why the need to belittle him?

Shame for Walcott, but he is half the player he was before the injury.

With no Walcott, Bent or Johnson, we seem a bit short on attacking players.

I can't believe King is going, because he could hardly move against Mexico.

Name the best 3 England performances of the last 10 years.

Then see how many of those games Heskey played in.

Then think about whether he should be in the squad.

Football is a TEAM game. Villa & Torres both score sh1tloads of goals but Spain always play worse when they're in the team together. It's about what works for the team not what individual player stats look like on your game of football manager.

'greed. Heskey has never been in to score goals, it's been to help the 1 player England feel will score them the most goals, first that was Owen and now it's Rooney. If Bent was THAT good he'd be in the squad but sadly he's destined to join the ranks of Andy Cole, Kevin Phillips, James Beattie and Andy Johnson in the 'good Premiership player but not quite England quality' ranks

As mentioned, he's scored something like 3 goals this season and struggled to get into the Villa team. He's never been a goalscorer. It just highlights how poor our striker options are when you see him going to a World Cup. Sure he can hold the ball up, but that's not enough for me. Just my opinion of course.
