Hmmm was handball but ref was saying play on, as they got the ball. If the keeper did play on but kicks it against a player which then goes into the net, a goal would be given so no different really

Surely if the ref has seen the handball and is playing advantage, he has to indicate with his arms that it is play-on?

Rather than make no gesticulations at all.


I did like the ref throwing him arm in the air in frustration when the goal went in (just before pointing to centre circle). You could tell he knew he'd f*cked up and that he had to give the goal

The referee did not have 1 single reason to disallow the goal. If he had hed probably been struck off.

I got told to play to the whistle when i was 9. If Gomez just punts the ball up field the only talking point would have been whether it was a pen or not.

Um..it was a handball, surely thats reason enough? If he played advantage fine...but was there an advantage? No. The ball ended up in the back of the net conceding a goal is not an advantage is it? Oh and LOL at him telling the tottenham players to go away yet says nothing to rio ferdinand standing their barking at the linesman and himself. Pathetic.

I'm in the 'play to the whistle camp' but for argument's sake, how many times have we seen advantage played for several passes, the ball lost and then brought back for the free kick?

I think he was, hence the discussion with the lino who clearly told him there was an handball - he appears to say that he was aware of that but had played on as Gomes had the ball in his hands. Gomes made a mistake by putting the ball down without having heard a whistle - end of.

The old phrase "these things tend to even themselves out over the course of a season" springs to mind

Not really comparable. Player(s) from both teams came over at the end of the ref's discussion in Huddlestone's goal, whereas everyone from Spurs had been waved away only for Ferdinand (not even their captain) to be allowed to get within a yard of them.

They are comparable in that the linesmen both made wrong calls and whilst he and the ref discussed the decision; player(s) from the team who gained were present.

Thing is, lino didn't flag for the handball - ref didn't give the handball.........so why did Spurs presume that a free kick was given. Ok i know it was obvious but without the whistle being blown to indicate a free kick to Tottenham then how can they disput it?

Common sense should apply. Nani didn't just fall on the ball with his hand, he deliberately stopped it. Everyone knows it was a free-kick and the laws of the fame should be flexible enough that Clattenburg would not get carpeted for making a decision to disallow the goal. Embarassing.
