However, the current badge was designed by a local design agency, so presumably the fans submitted designs were all utter crud.
Im very curious to see the old designs....Z175 wrote:Would be great if someone found the designs!
To be fair I like the one they chose though. And its certainly had a lot of "new" history now
I saw some shocking work in progress in the mid/late 1990s. I'll see if I can 'em out.Z175 wrote:Would be great if someone found the designs!

tbf, the lion is known as 'king' of the jungle... And we have a lion on our logo now!Fox Talbot wrote:Here we are.
unbadge1.jpgunbadge 2.jpgThere seemed to be some madness about changing the club name to Reading Royals involved, together with a fixation about lions that have nothing to with royals. Is anyone outside Reading even aware of the Forbury Lion?
I have no idea how advanced this work ever got.
Cream Design were the culprits. I thought at the time that one of the hooped quarters could easily have contained one of the elm trees from the old badge instead but it was not to be. SJM wanted a complete break from the past. Hence the half cooked design. It could have been so much more impressive.General B wrote:There's no denying it's a fascinating read.

Espeicially as the club moved to Whitley nigh on imposible.Terminal Boardom wrote:Cream Design were the culprits. I did hear though that the club were looking at going back to the old coat of arms for the Borough but gave up after they could not find 5 virgins.
I dind't know that but looking at Wigan, Fulham etc seems to make sense cos otherwise a bizarre number of clubs changed their badge.Svlad Cjelli wrote:Isn't part of the reason for changing a change in the trademark law?
If the old badge existed before the law changed, there was no full trademark protection, so no way to prosecute spivs and forgers etc producing and selling their own merchandise.
But a new badge, trademarked from day one, got round this legal problem. ISTR lots of clubs did the same at about the same time - Arsenal had lots of grief for having the cannon pointing in the "wrong" direction, or something like that.
The red and yellow appeared because of the away strip at the time. Why, oh why, can't the club come up with a second strip colour scheme and stick with it for once?Z175 wrote:I dind't know that but looking at Wigan, Fulham etc seems to make sense cos otherwise a bizarre number of clubs changed their badge.Svlad Cjelli wrote:Isn't part of the reason for changing a change in the trademark law?

I agree an Elm would have been nice on the new one but blue white red black and yellow doesn't need green too does it...
I've always thought that the Fulham badge looks odd. Something a bit, well, Swastika-like about it.Z175 wrote:I dind't know that but looking at Wigan, Fulham etc seems to make sense cos otherwise a bizarre number of clubs changed their badge.
