Are these not the camera's that are in line with the penalty box that are always there for games..? Or are these additional ones?

It's not hawkeye, it's just additional camera points for the increased media presence we receive ie Football First etc.

Hawkeye isn't coming to football, and secondly, when goal-line tech does come in, there will be cameras or lasers inside the posts, not outside of them.

Pretty sure it's Hawkeye - this is a pic of one corner of the St. Mary's installation where it was officially trialled by FIFA



Each grouping is much tighter at the Madejski and I also get the impression they're playing around with the position as it does look like they've changed them around a bit each game so far.

Why on earth would they develop a new system when they already have a functional system proven in other sports?

There are significant technical differences from the likes of cricket and tennis here. Hawkeye in cricket, and for non-service related line calls in tennis, uses a replay system which is quite different, as the specification for GLT is for a near-instant noticifaction to the referee if the ball crosses the line.

That means a real-time monitoring system, and the only equivalent is line calls at services in tennis, but in football the situation is a lot more complex - there might be various players' between ball and sensors, and the ball could potentially come from more directions (including spinning off posts or bar) - in tennis it's simply a ball coming from one direction only and with a clear line of sight from the sensors along the lines.

Pretty sure I heard from one of the Hawk Eye guys that the delay in tennis and cricket is for dramatic effect, as they made the call part of the theatre. The Hawk Eye system is predictive and the algorythms used in football shouldn't need to be any different.

it's really only making one call. Did the ball cross that line. Which is exactly the same decision as in Tennis and Cricket.

...but in the case of football they are not trying to predict the flight? It is measuring precisely where the ball is. Otherwise, I concur!
