Englishmen Abroad

by stealthpapes » 13 Nov 2013 21:42

I just read that there is a total of 1 (one) English player who was played a whole 90 minutes in one of the other European top leagues (France, Spain, Italy, Germany) this season.

1 - really?

2 - name him and the team

I imagined the question was about this season (I would have thought that Joey Barton has played a full 90 minutes in his career in France, for example). And Michael Mancienne has (according to Kicker) not made any appearances in the 1. Bl this season.

Yes, Portugal was not one of the four leagues listed and yes, this season.

I thought there were a few more Army Brat Germans like Holtby, but possibly not.
The answer is actually

Read it where? Either they lied or Portugal is allowed to be on the list. Also is the 90 minutes specific to league games or do cup/european ties count?

New York Times. I don't know, does that count as a reasonably reputable source?

I've checked the player they mention. He doesn't play in Portugal.

genuinely stumped by the original question

related - James Keene (Former Pompey) plays for Elfsborg in Sweden and played in their Champions League qualifier this year. Anton Ferdinand though can't seem to get in the team at Turkish mid table Antalyaspor.

If it's the same player I 'found out about' (Googled), I read about it in 'The Independent', and he plays in one of the leagues papes stipulated.

Matt Jones plays in goal for Belenenses. Never played for an English team though.

Unless you also count SImone Perrotta who was born in Ashton Under Lyne
