Wigan away trains?

I`m looking to go to Wigan with my grandson on the train. Does anyone know what would be the cheapest way to go. I have seen one way is 1 change at Birmingham going and 1 change at Wolverhampton coming back.

Advance tickets are often cheaper, but if the game is rescheduled you will probably be out of pocket - best to check the cancellation/refund policy.

Time of travel can also affect prices, I did Reading to Derby £15 there and £25 back booked in advance at different times on Cross Country trains.

Assuming Grandson doesn't already have a train season ticket (Gold Card), which gives 1/3rd off travel for him and 3 others travelling with him, A railcard may be worth investing in, Three is an OAP one (you may not qualify, you may be a young Granddad) or a family one.... maybe a student one if Grandson is at uni.

Tv matches already announced-we are not on therefore 3pm KO-Rarely use the train so a £30 railcard wouldn`t save me anything-have bought before I read 3rd post-am changing at Brum int going and Wolverhampton coming back.
