It wouldn't happen in a normal working environment, so why should it happen in football?

I think its a long way off. You only have to hear of the experiences of people like Karen Brady in the boardroom to realise there's still a sexist heart that beats in football.

I think the players would be more accepting of it though and the list of very successful managers who had less than stellar playing careers is long so I don't think for 1 minute that the relative standard of the women's game would be a remotely valid argument. Mourinho's never kicked a ball in anger in his life.

If the NFL can accommodate female coaches then no reason why football can't.

It's a similar rationale to the conversations 40+ years ago about widespread representation by black players.

While the game is institutionally conservative and always likes to do things the way it always has, it's ultimately all about success. If a female coach emerges who is clearly good enough, then they will be employed by a men's team - that team will go for anything to help them win.

So really the obstacle is opportunities for female coaches to prove that they are good enough and can add competitive advantage to a men's team - that might take ten or so years, but I don't doubt it'll happen.

Sadly I agree, you only have to see the abuse that's handed out when a woman does something as normal as commentating or being a pundit to know whoever gets a manager\coaching job first is on a hiding to nothing unless they win trophies immediately. I'd love to see someone like Emma Hayes given a chance though.

Apparently Jill Scott is lined up to coach in Manchester City's academy. That would seem the obvious first step. She's got her UEFA A licence.

Clermont Foot 63 in France have been managed by 2 different women. One quit after a day but Corine Diacre lasted 3 years. She quit to manage the Women's national team.

Helen Nkwocha is the first woman to manage a top flight men's team in Europe, albeit in the Faroe Islands.

The current Chelsea Ladies manager, Emma Hayes, could manage a mens professional team without a shadow of a doubt.
