On the paper season ticket renewal I received in the mail this morning, I am asked to identify my ethnic group (e.g. White British), my religion, and whether I have a disability - including reference to 'HIV, Cancer and Multiple Sclerosis'

This is in the name of 'Equal Opportunity Monitoring'

If that is the case and Reading FC is 'commited to preventing discrimination ...... on the grounds of ...... sexual orientation (and) marital status', then why am I not asked if I'm straight, gay, bi, and/or married?

So they find out who's gay, for example, and get a steward or someone to make sure they're not being treated differently when being told to sit down, or being served a luke warm lager? I think it's disgraceful. What does being gay, having aids or MS have to do with ANYONE else, particularly at a football ground?

EDIT: I note now I've read it again, they DON'T ask if you're gay. Which in actual fact then, is not equal opportunity monitoring anyway, because what about people who are!!

Surely it makes it more likely that you will be disciminated against if the fact that you may be part of some minority is declared ?

Based on the form they can't tell if you are gay, or have an illness or what the colour of your skin or reigion is (OK if your name is Mohammed Ali there is a clue, or if you are the Revd Green).

Once the info is available it could allow someone to bin all the applications in which the person is (say) Welsh.

I'm sure they cannot store it at an individual level, but is it actually of any use ?

It may or may not be Reading Borough Council, the FA, the Premier League, etc etc - or someone else , but I very much doubt that this is something that RFC would be doing for their own benefit.

As long as people pay them I doubt if they care about their ethnic diversity or sexual preferences etc....

I'm sure you are right but as there is no legal requirement for the club to undertake such monitoring they could have told that body to take a hike. That is particularly the case if is the idiots at RBC. What have they done to help the club/supporters recently? And who needs whom more? I suspect RBC need RFC (aka Mr M) far more than the other way around.

As for those who dislike this sort of thing, either ignore the questions or, if you are worried about reprisals,complete them with false information to render the whole politically correct exercise useless!

They're sure to need something off them at some stage, even if they do have the right to refuse, so it'd be short-sighted to risk losing their goodwill.

Who can say? If this were true, I would prefer that RFC tell this mob to take a hike. I don't get asked to supply this information when I register to vote, or when I apply for a credit card, so why should I be asked by a football club.

Perhaps the club will employ some of the laid off promotions department to enter the data collected into a computer so that the outside body is kept at bay. After all, what's more important, generating a little bit of revenue and employing local staff, or remaining to be seen as PC?
