Why is it played in January anyway? - why cant they do it in June time when most seasons have finished meaning clubs dont have to lose players?!

Because June is the rainy season across large swathes of Africa.

And we're not just talking a light drizzle every now and then here.

For a competition to be going since the 50's or 60's without complaint from European clubs, now to have Joe Public moaning and groaning about it shows how many African born players now play in Europe.

They didn't change the date, all managers knew this, no surprise, shut your mouth and get on with it.

The only issue I have with the ACN is that it is every two years rather than every four (as with the Euros) - a little bit excessive IMO seeing the amount of African players that are now based overseas and how well African nations are starting to do at the World Cup.

While I understand why the ACN is this time of year I don't get how FIFA can go on about their football calendar which means that countries can insist on players being made available at certain dates and then have this in addition

Yeah, that could be changed.

Lots of African teams now take part in the WC, compared to 30 years ago.

ACN is every two years to maximise incomes, simple as that. worth remembering that every four years the ACn qualification doubles up as WC qualifying as well.

anyway, here's my take on it:
Group A looks pretty open with three strong teams. i think if Guinea can get past Morocco they could be something of a dark horse. Ghana can be expected to win the tournament.
Group B looks quality - expect lots of violence on and off the pitch.
Group C should be a cakewalk for Egypt and Cameroon but both Sudan and Zambia are improving and either could spring a shock.
Group D is the Group of Death - that could go any way, SA probably look weakest.

Ghana or Angola will win I reckon - if Angola win they will host the tournament as holders.

Hosts tend to do very well.

Arabic-african sides do pretty poorly in sub-saharan tournaments.
