'Jester' Ian Wright attacks BBC

Footballer turned TV pundit Ian Wright has said he no longer wishes to work at the BBC, claiming he was made "a comedy jester" by the corporation.

The former England and Arsenal striker said fans could not relate to the BBC's coverage or its presenters.

"I don't know how long young people are going to want to sit down and watch that same old 'jacket, shirt and tie' format," he told Broadcast magazine.

"That's why I've said to them I don't want to do the England games any more."

A spokesman for the BBC said Wright was on a freelance contract and that it wished him well.

Wright was most often employed for coverage of England matches and FA Cup ties, the rights to which switch to ITV from August.

Wright, who will soon be seen hosting Gladiators on Sky One with Kirsty Gallacher, began presenting after he retired from football in 2000.

He joined the BBC in 2001, appearing on programmes including Match of the Day.

According to Broadcast, though, the 44-year-old believes he was "just there as a comedy jester to break the ice with Alan Shearer and Alan Hansen," whom he accused of doing "run-of-the-mill things".

"I can't do that anymore," he is quoted as saying. "People want something different."

To be honest, he was little more than the "court jester" that he suggests. What he seems unable to accept is that it's his fault because his attempts at analysis were a complete joke. England could be 0-7 down and down to eight men, and he'd still say that he just knows England can do it.

The interview carried on in one of the papers, and he went on to moan that not enough is done to appeal to 12-19 year olds (as well as the obligatory "not enough black or Asian faces" comment). Quite why he believes coverage of international football should be tailored to appeal to teenagers is beyond me.

Ian Wright is a personality, when it comes to Hanson, Shearer, Lawrenson, it's all the same cliches. Wright might not have known that much of what he was talking about but he was refreshing to see someone passionate on MOTD. That midget comment he made during the WC had me in stitches all day.

Personally, I think that is a totally valid point, and well done on him for saying it. I used to dislike him, but I grew to like him as he was different. I sensed every time he was speaking from the heart, and didn't just spout the same old robotic and scripted shite as the other monkeys on the programmes.
