Cant find it online at the mo, but read about the owners in deep doggy doo due to the change in world markets, lost money hand over fist and basically cant afford to payroll the Hammers any more at this time, two players already gone, and more expected to follow to cut wages back sharply, seems all the TV money and 35-000 crowds is not enough to pay salaries of £50k a week.

Thw wage structure is simply unmanageable for a club that doesn't even get European football. The club pulled out all the stops to survive in the Premiership after the Pardew sacking and spent big money and big wages on average players like Calum Davenport, Boa Morte and Quashie. Since, they've struggled with injuries but the squad numbers are too big for a Premier League club. Taken from wikipedia, squad list looks like;

Can't really compare Sunderland to West Ham. Splashing the cash in players like Gordon and Jones is one thing. West Ham's problems come from signing average players like Neill or injury prone ones like Dyer and Bellamy on ridiculous wages.

Means exactly what it says.

West ham were in a financial mess in 2005. They didn't sell players to pay their debts, but instead kept them in the hope of promotion. They scraped in the play offs (relied on other results on the final day) and escaped Administration as a result. They basically gambled everything on promotion.

Amazing how things change on just one game. Leeds might be a decent prem side now had they won the play off final the following year, look at them now.

Not surmised, it was fact at the time. I used it to illustrate to some bods how ridiculous the 10 points deduction rule was.

That was the season when we came 7th and West Ham came 6th, and so got into the play-offs. If they'd lost their play-off semi-final, they would have had to go into administration very soon, and certainly before the next season, and so they would have had to have been deducted 10 points. That would have meant that their points total would have to gone down and they would no longer qualify for the play-offs - we would! Cue confusion and possible legal challenges, etc.....

I also have some very juicy rumours about why West Ham are happy to operate the way they do, financially, but I can't say!
