He said that he went into Nicky Hammonds office and all he was told was "It's time for a change".

They've been paid well during their time at the club no doubt and will go down as Reading legends - what more can they have wished for than that? Hammond was honest with them and the club needs to go forward without them so what's wrong with that?

Hammond is the one in charge of contracts and negotiations. The coaches and manager are in charge of training, matches and tactics.

It's time for a change is a perfectly valid explanation. And much better than, we think you're past it and not worth the cost anymore.

Sounds like Hammond was bang on the money.

It could only have been improved if he'd begged Murty to focus on his future career in a footballing capacity with some other club, for the benefit of TV viewers and radio listeners, and told him that no-one who saw him play before the 2005-06 could reasonably have thought that he would have made it at the highest level so his performances during the following two seasons gave hope to all honest triers.

Murty should count himself lucky to be employed for 10 years by the same employer and thankful for them helping him while his time out injured (which was pretty much 2 seasons in all. Remember his early back problems?)

I heard it. Danny Kelly and Ray Houghton were like 'poor old you'. I thought they were going to start crying at one point. Fair play to Murts, he just said 'that's football'. He also said he wanted to continue playing as he's missed the last 2 years and feels he still has at least one more year left in him. He's spoken to a few clubs etc....
